Faber: It's important to realize that astronomically, the seeds of life on Earth were sown four and a half billion years ago when the sun and solar system formed.
Faber: This is a special moment in astronomy when the size of the telescopes and detectors is big enough, for the first time, to look back billions of years.
Faber: What the DEEP Survey is telling us is that, in a lot of galaxies, there may have been enough heavy elements to make life a lot earlier than the sun, as early as nine or ten billion years back in time.

 Autobiographical Sketch: Sandra M Faber
Sandra Faber is known for her research on understanding the origins of the Universe, and of galaxies in particular.
Sandra continues to work on this subject, acting as a data aide to other astronomers who are mathematically more gifted than she, since that is what the subject now requires.
Sandra, with much effort and lots of luck, has pursued three goals - an exciting research career, a career as a mentor and teacher of students, and a wonderfully satisfying family life (with the help and support of her husband Andy).

The optical error, which Faber diagnosed with one of her students and a staffer from the Space Telescope Institute, meant that none of the telescope's 20 man-years of planning and 200 of testing were salvageable.
Faber and several other colleagues spent months retracing the steps of the main parts of the telescope, most of which were built and assembled for NASA by subcontractors.
Faber keeps busy juggling several different projects at any given time, but as a researcher, she's spent most of her career as a cosmologist studying galaxy formation.

In 1976 Sandra Faber and Robert Jackson used the above demonstrated empirical formulas to develop their relationship for the correlation between the luminosity of an elliptical galaxy and the velocity dispersion in its center.
It is important to remember that the purpose of the relationships is to develop a distance ladder … meaning that we simply use the velocity to find a relationship between the luminosity of the unknown and known distance galaxy so that we may determine it’s relative distance.
The Tully-Fisher relation was developed in the 70’s and 80’s by Tully and Fisher in the wake of the discoveries by Faber and Jackson.

Faber describes them as “big, fluffy balls of stars.” But because they are less highly structured, she thought they might also be simpler to understand.
And yet, as Faber says, “Space is full of this stuff.” Making a small rectangle with her fingers, she says, “If you look right here, there could be dozens of these things [particles of dark matter, or “weakly interacting massive particles,” as physicists call them] passing through here in a second.

Astronomer Sandra Faber stands before the Hubble Deep Field, an image taken in 1995 that focused on atiny, random patch of sky and revealed the most distant galaxies ever seen.
The project, called the Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe, or DEEP, was conceived almost ten years ago by Faber and two of her colleagues, professors of astronomy and astrophysics David Koo and Garth Illingworth.
On a smaller scale, Faber and her colleagues have extended their observations even further to include some of the most distant galaxies known, at redshifts of 2.5 and beyond.

Harvard was not well known at that time for optical observational astronomy, her chosen field, but she selected it over Caltech because it was much closer to her future husband, Andrew Faber, who wa still finishing at Swarthmore.

The images show that stars become strongly concentrated towards the center of M87, as if drawn into the center and held there by the gravitational field of a massive fl hole.
