Sandtown (as residents call the neighborhood of Sandtown-Winchester), is a community of approximately twelve thousand people plagued with vacant, boarded-up properties and vacant lots dating back to the early days of urban renewal during the l950s.
Sandtown is characterized by absentee landlords, housing abandonment, and arson.

Sandtown is a children’s choir from Baltimore who was discovered while performing with dc Talk several years ago and recently signed to Toby McKeehan’s Gotee Records.
Composed of about 40 kids ranging in age from 8 to 14, all from the Sandtown neighborhood, the choir exists as a positive influence in the urban culture.

Sandtown Community Association made the decision to choose and be proactive.
Sandtown lobbied the Office of Economic Development for $125, 000 in funding to embark on the Sandtown Visioning/ Master Planning, later to be called “Blueprint Sandtown.” Fulton Board of Commissioners, Fulton County Planning, Public Works, and Parks supported the efforts and participated.
Sandtown supported her efforts by reiterating the need for a middle school and quality program planning in South County for nearly two years at BOE meetings.

SANDTOWN is a different story…it has incredible musical, vocal, and writing talent, but its message (brought forth by a choir of little angels with attitude) is a powerful one, not to be overshadowed by anything.
In Sandtown, the Royal Theater on Pennsylvania Avenue was one of the major East Coast stops for artists on their way to the Uptown in Philadelphia, and the Apollo in Harlem.
SANDTOWN is telling the world that no matter where you come from, no matter who you are, the color of your skin (there are white kids in this group as well), the parents you have, how poor or rich you are, God can be your friend, too.

Sandtown is a development of New Song Arts, a music program reaching children and youth in west Baltimore’s Sandtown-Winchester community.
On April 2nd, 2002, the Sandtown Children of Praise embarked on their annual spring tour on a 57 passenger bus filled with 30 choir members, chaperones, granola bars, movies, and every imaginable hand-held video game.

Sandtown remains a place where an 89-year-old woman can be knifed to death in her home, or an old man selling snow cones on the sidewalk outside his house can be gunned down at 10:30 in the morning.
In the end, a Sandtown that maintained the same people in the same place was a Sandtown that could not change dramatically for the better.

"Sandtown used to be a thriving community," explains LaVerne Stokes, a life-long resident and co-executive director of Sandtown HFH.
But the people of Sandtown, according to Stokes and others, have always had a deep sense of community, and while many moved out, many chose to stay -- even though staying meant living within a 72-block area of dilapidated, vacated row houses, and lacking the political and financial clout to rebuild their community.
