The Sandusky River is a tributary to Lake Erie in north-central Ohio in the United States.
The Sandusky River begins at the spring-fed Walton Lake, west of Ontario in western Richland County, and initially flows westwardly through the towns of Crestline and Bucyrus in Crawford County.
In 1970, the river's course between Upper Sandusky and Fremont was designated a State Scenic River by the government of Ohio.

The small village further south on the Sandusky River was known as Little Sandusky, and still further south was Upper Sandusky...all named after Indian name for the river.
Products were brought to Lower Sandusky for sale or exchange, and for shipment by way of the Sandusky River and Lake Erie to Buffalo, and then to New York.
According to the Sandusky County History report, strangers passing through or stopping on business would see the streets crowded with loaded teams waiting their turn to unload.

Flooding is a common condition along the Sandusky River, which begins north of Galion, Ohio, and empties into Sandusky Bay and then Lake Erie, north of Fremont.
The flood of 1913 is generally considered to be the worst in terms of damage done, with 7.2 inches of rain falling between March 23 and March 27.
The Sandusky River in Fremont crested nearly seven feet higher than any previously-recorded measurement, and over four feet higher than the flood of 1959.

The Sandusky Wildlife Area is the name of a new 35 acre site that has been preserved by the Crawford Park District, working in cooperation with the Friends of the Crawford Park District, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
