South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom in the South Atlantic.
South Georgia and its associated islands, wich consist of the island of South Georgia Island, which is by far the largest island in the territory, the islands that immediately surround the main island of South Georgia and some remote and isolated islets west and east-southeast of the main island of South Georgia Island.
To the northwest of Zavodovski Island is the Protector Shoal, a submarine volcano.

The Sandwich Islands was the name given by Captain James Cook to Hawaii on his discovery of the islands on January 18, 1778.
The name was given in honour of one of his sponsors, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, who was at the time the First Lord of the Admiralty and Cook's superior officer.
The Sandwich Islands should not be confused with the South Sandwich Islands, an uninhabited British dependency in the southern Atlantic Ocean.

As it encounters the South American Plate, the South Sandwich Plate is forced to pass underneath, hence the formation of the South Sandwich Islands less than 5 million years ago.
For example, the peak on Zavodovski, the northernmost of the islands, stands at 1,807 feet (551 m), while the peak on Visokoi, the island just south of it, is 3,295 feet (1,005 m) tall.

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) used to be a dependency of the Falkland Islands, but since 1985, under the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands Order, was formed as a separate British Overseas Territory, under a Commissioner who is at the same time, Governor of the Falkland Islands.
