Sandy, Oregon is a city of 6,800 people located on the Mt. Hood Highway (U.S. 26) midway between Portland and Mt. Hood.
Sandy's first settlers, the Francis Revenue family, arrived in 1853 and soon opened a trading post here on the Barlow Road and served many of the thousands of pioneers who traveled through on their way to the Willamette Valley.
Sandy was named for the nearby Sandy River which was originally identified as the "Quicksand River" by Lewis and Clark; however, the name "Quicksand" gradually evolved into "Sandy.

Headwaters of the Sandy River in the Mount Hood Wilderness.
It rises in the Cascades in eastern Clackamas County, issuing from the Reid Glacier on the flanks of Mount Hood (the nearby Sandy Glacier drains into Muddy Fork, a tributary to the Sandy River).
It is joined by the Zigzag River and Salmon River and then flows northwest past Sandy and Troutdale and joins the Columbia from the south in central Multnomah County, approximately 14 mi (23 km) east of Portland, near the lower end of the Columbia River Gorge.

The Sandy Historical Society is currently, temporarily, housed at 39065 Pioneer Boulevard, in Sandy Oregon.
The museum's location borders the exact site of the famous Barlow Road, which was the last leg of the Oregon Trail that brought thousands of pioneers in covered wagons over the Cascade Mountains to western Oregon from the mid 1840s until the 1870s.
The museum will be a repository for history from this area, something that Sandy Historical Society has wanted for many years.
