Sandy Denny - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sandy Denny (born Alexandra Elene MacLean Denny, January 6, 1947, Wimbledon, London, England, died April 21, 1978) was a British singer and songwriter.
Denny is credited with introducing Fairport Convention to the traditional British folk repetoire, and is thus a key figure in the development of British folk-rock.
Denny herself was unsure as to whether she wanted to continue in that vein (in the manner of Steeleye Span and Maddy Prior) or that of a singer-songwriter like Joni Mitchell.

Sandy has a voice and the power to use it to make songs come alive like no one else--the only downside to her career is that it was cut off too soon (for those of you who don't know her work, she only lived to be 31 and died as the result a household accident).

Alexandra Elene MacLean Denny, you are charged that in the years between 1968 and 1974 you did, whether wilfully or out of plain carelessness, content yourself with merely becoming a British rock queen, instead of nurturing a world-class songwriting talent into the revolutionary force it once bade fair to be.
At this stage Denny is still intent on keeping some Germanic roughage in the text, thereby providing her melodic sweetness with something to bite against.
Sandy Denny is a pleasant representative of the most pleasant scene in British rock- the well-bred, well brushed, clean-edged and gently lyrical constellation of electro-folk.

Apologists will also point out that Denny was not in peak form at this show, but since she made so few live recordings to begin with, and since the remastered sound on this CD is pretty darn good, this is probably your best chance to assess her concert skills.

Denny's fragile self-esteem was rattled by a particularly cruel part of the 1960s pop whirl.
From thereon in, though she could still scrape incredible heights, she was rather hampered by soupy arrangements (she was particularly partial to the string sections she described as her "fur coat"), and, on her last album, the fact that her voice was showing the strain that came from her fondness for drink and drugs.

Sandy's songwriting is outstanding, and she surrounds herself here with an excellent cast (Fairports and others) who play with passion and depth throughout.
Sandy sometimes missed on other releases by attempting to record light/playful songs--her voice doesn't work for this material, and she is at her best when she sings the heavy material, often dark and melancholy.
"Sandy" was Denny's second album after leaving Fairport Convention, and is something of a transitional effort in that she is still singing in what we would call the traditional manner of a folk singer, but with attention being paid to the arrangements and instrumentation that are more sophisticated.

Sandy Denny has one of those voices that transports you to a smoky and cluttered living room basked in the autumn light of 1969.
Thompson flexes his soloing muscles with clean, jogging runs that eventually sink behind Denny's fierce question: "You must philosophize, but why must you bore me to tears?" The tune is subtly complex with a poppy 4/4 chorus, but a slightly-off 5/4 verse.
It is nearly impossible to believe Denny was only 22 when you hear the soul and maturity in "Who Knows Where the Time Goes." Appropriately enough, she recorded this song often during her career, but it is here we find the definitive version.

Sandy Denny: Gold Dust - Live At The Royalty ---Ink Blot Magazine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
Singer / songwriter Sandy Denny grew up in a household that equally appreciated traditional Scots ballads, stage musicals, and the Ink Spots, and her career was similarly eclectic.
She first gained attention singing traditional English folk music with the Strawbs (in 1967) and Fairport Convention (in 1968-70 and 1975-6), but her band Fotheringay (1970-71) and solo career (1971-1978) were devoted to her own writing.
It is both tragic and ironical that this November, 1977 concert from Sandy Denny's comeback solo tour (her first after leaving Fairport Convention for the second time a year earlier) was her final performance ever; it captures her at the top of her game.
