Sandy Powell (comedian) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sandy Powell (January 30, 1900 - June 26, 1982) was an English comedian best known for his radio work of the 1930s and for his catchphrase Can You Hear Me, Mother?
During this part of his career he was associated with the singer Gracie Fields, and released several records where he collaborated with her.
Powell said that the catchphrase originated on an occasion when he had dropped his script and was killing time at the microphone while rearranging the pages.

 ROTHERHAM4NEWS - Sandy Powell
Sandy's father was a stagehand at a local theatre and his mother was just 18 when they met and married the year before Sandy was born.
In June 1936, Sandy promised to endow and maintain a cot at the Rotherham hospital, and was gratefully accepted by the then chairman of the weekly board of the hospital, Mr A Blenkinsop, JP.
These pictures are Sandy's children, Peter, at the age of 20, who volunteered when he was 17, and saw a good deal of action, and Peggy who took up important government work at Blackpool, and unlike her brother, showed an interest in the stage, but in straight acting rather than follow in her father's footsteps.

The comedians who came to dominate the stand-up scene in the 1960s-70s were predominantly white working class males who had spent years touring the circuits of night clubs and working men’s clubs with little or no changes in their material, which consisted largely of strings of unconnected standardised jokes.
The comedian’s situated entry, documented in such detail by Rutter, is a telling moment for it transforms the theatre space of the venue into theatrical space.
Stand-up comedians are just one form of comic figure and this section has made clear across a wide variety of cultures that there have always been comic figures, mythical or actual, who have had a licence for behaviour which normally would be socially censured – tricksters, clowns, buffoons, parasites, fools, jesters, comedians.

GENUKI: What's in a Name, POWELL, from "The Peak Advertiser", Derbyshire
Hence "the son of Robin" first appears as "ap Robin" then as "Probyn." The surname "Powell" is constructed on a Welsh word which signifies "outstanding" or "excelling" and from which the personal name Howel emerged (Anglicised to Howell).
Griffith Powel or Powell (1561-1620), Principal of Jesus College, Oxford, is described as "third sonne of John ap Hywel ap John."
There are certainly old records to confirm this derivation as in the case of Jordan de Powella (Warwick, 1184), Ralph atte Powel (Huntingdon, 1288) and John de Powel (Oxford, 1339) but unfortunately the records do not provide clues to the exact locations.
