The Golden Boy's absence went unexplained for years, until a 1970s JLA story that revealed Sandy had been transformed into a sort of monstrous sand creature in an accident involving one of Dodds's experimental devices, and that Dodds had kept him in suspended animation while seeking a cure.
Sandy's use of the Sanford costuming does serve to distinguish him from his less flamboyant mentor, the original Sandman; it also makes a sort of visual sense since Sanford's costume, like Sandy's original Golden Boy outfit, is red and gold.

At some point Sandy got involved in one of the Sandman's cases and although the very idea of ever getting a kid sidekick, thereby bringing a child's life in danger, was totally foreign to Wesley he was so impressed with Sanderson's skills and courage that he decided to give the boy a chance.
