	Sanford Berman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The spark of Berman's cataloging revolution was the inclusion in Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) of the term kaffir, which he came across while working in Zambia : "Berman was told by offended fl fellow-workers that calling someone a kafir was similar to being called a nigger in America" (Pendergrast).
		Berman is also known for his role in encouraging the Library of Congress to drop such archaic headings as WATER CLOSET in favor of common terminology.
		With other Minnesota librarians, as well as nationally and internationally, Berman is known for promoting activist librarianship in which personal ideals entailing social justice are part and parcel of professional work.

		It was a Monday, this past January 18, and Berman had wedged himself into his small cubicle in suburban Plymouth's library administration headquarters, turning his attention to his manual Remington typewriter.
		For a man in charge of more than a dozen catalogers, Berman wasn't fond of hierarchies--thus his conviction that "Supervisors should be accessible and not occupy some sort of mystified space or be up on some metaphoric pedestal!" And so Berman's cubicle was the exact size as all the others there.
		Berman's memo, as it rolled from the typewriter, a bit crumpled and smudged at the edges, had the visceral stink and charm of an era that's all but gone.

		Many headings that Berman created for "new concepts" and used in cataloging at the Hennepin County Library, such as "GAY RIGHTS", "ACID RAIN", and "PUNK ROCK MUSIC", were later added to the LCSH.
		Sanford Berman's passionate advocacy for access to information through changes to standard cataloging practices extends beyond his calls for reform and change to subject heading practices; he targets descriptive cataloging practices as well.
		Although Berman and his staff created these classes based on literary warrant in the 1970s, as of 2003 some of these topics still do not have a specific Dewey notation.

		Back in the 1970s, Sanford (Sandy) Berman, the head cataloger at Hennepin County Library in Minnesota, did something librarians rarely do: He started making up his own subject headings.
		For example, Berman discarded the term "Aged" in favor of "Seniors," and introduced new, previously unauthorized terms into his catalog like "Gay Rights," "Apartheid," "Chinese New Year" and "Punk Rock Music" - subject headings that Berman used freely in his catalog years (sometimes decades) before they found their way into the official LC system.
		Berman gained such a following among other catalogers that his tags gained widespread adoption in libraries all over the country, threatening LC's monopoly on classification.
