Sangihe and Talaud are a chain of islands stretching north from Sulawesi in the direction of the Philippines.
In 2002 Sangihe and Talaud became seperate regencies, with the capital of Sangihe being Tahuna, while that of Talaud is Melonguane.

This beautiful parrot is endemic to Sangihe and Talaud, but the population of the nominate Sangihe race is extremely small, and lories have only been seen at Talawid; birds were recorded in 1995, but absent from the site in 1996, and should be looked for in both forest patches and in plantations.

The discovery of a new submarine volcano in the far north of the Sangihe arc, west of Kawio Islands was a major highlight and outcome of IASSHA 2003.
Target P is possibly the ‘lost’ Sangir submarine volcano due to the presence of fresh volcanic glass and slightly elevated levels of methane, and the presence of a chloritic breccia which we interpret as a hydrothermally altered basalt.
We plan to conduct research on the considerable number of samples, bathymetric and gravity data acquired, and report the outcomes with the aim of clarifying the geological and tectonic environment of the region in general, and of the hydrothermal site at Target Q in particular.

The Lesser Sundas were a logistical challenge but worthwhile and rewarding, with 60 ticks for me. I enjoyed all 4 islands we birded, although not the boat trips to and from Sumbawa, an island we did not bother to bird as all its specialities can be seen on the other islands.
Boy met us at the ferry from Sangihe but as his driver was ill, we took a taxi to Tangkoko – a slow journey due to heavy Sunday night traffic – arriving at 20.15.
We waited for Sangihe Scops-Owl to call, only hearing Lilac Kinfisher and Red-bellied Pitta, but eventually 3 or 4 responded and one was spot-lit at 18.30.

Usually I dive at the Bunaken Nation Marine Park, but this time I visited for the second time the outlying islands of Siau (didn't reach Sangihe though) with a liveaboard and went to the Lembeh strait and to the Bangka islands.
The Siau, Sangihe and Talaud islands lie to the northeast of Sulawesi (large map by Murex 190KB) and are dominated by the 1830m Karangetang volcano (list of Sangihe volcanoes Global Volcanism Program).
There are several parrots among them the Red-and-blue Lory (Eos histrio) and other birds such as the Talaud rail and bush-hen and the Sangihe scops owl that are very rare or nearly extinct.
