Birds of the parrot family can be found in most of the warmer parts of the world, including India, South East Asia and West Africa, with one species, now extinct, in the United States (the Carolina Parakeet).

Parrots and Humans Parrots are among the most familiar of bird species to the general public, and are generally held in esteem and affection even by people uninterested in natural history or conservation.
Parrots also have historically been valued as objects of trade between cultures, leading to their distribution far beyond the boundaries of their natural ranges and their establishment in numerous feral exotic populations.
Parrots are susceptible to over 30 known pathogens and disease syndromes, many of which are widespread in captive collections and some of which cannot be reliably detected in carrier birds by presently available tests or standard quarantine procedures.

A survey in 1998-1999 resulted in a population estimate for Sangihe Hanging-parrot (10,700-46,200) that is sufficiently high to recommend that the species’s threat status be downgraded.
The density estimate figures show that the species had little preference for forest and, as in previous years, this was a widely distributed species occurring up to altitudes of c.1,000 m.
The author proposed that the species’s status should be reduced to globally near-threatened and its population monitored carefully.

 bp conservation programme
The Sangihe and Talaud islands support three of Indonesia’s four endangered parrot species; these are: Red-and -blue Lory Eos histrio, Sangihe Hanging-parrot Loriculus catamene and Blue-naped Parrot Tanygnathus lucionensis.
Building on their 1995 surveys on the islands of Talaud and Sangihe in Indonesia, the team returned in 1996 to initiate a conservation programme for the endangered Red-and-blue Lory (Eos histrio) and undertook further research on the islands' endemic avifauna.
This year activities on Sangihe and Talaud will take place in four broad areas: awareness work with local communities; training and development of Forestry Conservation Department officials; consultation and co-ordination with local government officials; further research into the status, ecology and conservation of endangered parrot species.

The Red and Blue Lory Eos histrio, endemic to Sangihe and the Talaud Islands in Indonesia, has seriously declined in the wild state, to the extent that the nominate subspecies from Sangihe might be extinct, especially if hybridisation has occurred with the introduced subspecies talautensis.
Habitat alteration has occurred on the islands, but the major threat in recent years has been from trapping, even though the species is included in Appendix I of the Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) and the Indonesian Government has set a zero capture quota for this species.
Other species are the Red-flanked Lorikeet Charmosyna placentis, Violet-necked Lory Eos squamata, Moluccan Hanging Parrot Loriculus amabilis, Moluccan King Parrot Alisterus amboinensis, Red-cheeked Parrot Geoffroyus geoffroyi, Eclectus Parrot Eclectus roratus, and Great-billed Parrot Tanygnathus megalorhynchus.
