"Huanxiang Sanguozhi", meaning Fantasy Story of Three Kingdoms, is based on historical events, featuring famous characters from the Three Kingdoms epoch, which became so popular in Asia thanks to Luo Guanzhong's classic novel.
But the game gives a different interpretation to the story, involving fictional and supernatural characters and themes that were absent in other adaptations of the saga.

For me, "Sanguozhi" by Yoshikawa is one of such books, and I have read this for about 15 times, never tiring of it.
I would say it was his discerning eye that grasped the real ability and worth of people and his ability to utilize these people based on his judgement.

BabelStone : The Textual History of Sanguo Yanyi : The Manchu Translation
However, there is no hard evidence that the Sanguozhi translated by Dahai was indeed Sanguo Yanyi, and the only sources that date the translation of the novel to the pre-conquest period are late 19th century authors (Wang Songru and Chen Kangqi) whose reliability has to be in question.
Secondly, the dynastic history Sanguozhi was translated at an early date, and apparently published in Shunzhi 4 [1647], three years before the completion of Sanguo Yanyi.
also Zheng Zhenduo, "Sanguozhi Yanyi de yanhua" p.168, where he mentions that in some forgotten book he had once read it was stated that many Manchu officers carried a copy of the Manchu translation of Sanguo Yanyi with them when they invaded China.

In the absence of a complete translation of Sanguozhi, you might like to try and get hold of The Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms (220-265): Chapters 69-78 from the Tzu chih t’ung chien of Ssu-ma Kuang, by the splendidly-named Achilles Fang (Harvard University Press, 1965).
This translates the Three Kingdoms-related chapters of the Zizhi Tongjian, and one of the main sources for that was the Sanguozhi.

One of the greatest attractions of the Sanguo yanyi for its readers is its unambiguous treatment of the Three Kingdoms hero, Liu Bei of Shu, as the legitimate successor to the Han dynasty.
The official history of the era, Sanguozhi, by Chen Shou, is equally unambiguous in its treatment of the Wei house of the Cao Cao as the legitimate successor.
These works are of interest not just in the development of official historiography but also for innovations in format and design that potentially influenced the formation of the Sanguo yanyi.

 Sanguozhi Biographies
The majority of us first come into contact with Luo Guanzhong's SGYY (Sanguo Yanyi) since it is available in english which is understandable by the masses.
As widespread as SGYY is which most of us are accustomed to, there is SGZ (Sanguozhi) which is compiled by Chen Shou who was once an officer of Shu.
Although Chen Shou is born toward the ending years of the Three Kingdoms era, his SGZ biography is veered more towards history than Luo Guanzhong's novel.

The only "evidence" that Luo Guanzhong was actually associated with Zhang Shicheng are remarks to that effect made by the Qing author Gu Ling 顧苓 in his postface to a book of illustrations to Shuihu Zhuan (see Taying Yuan Ji 4:9a-b; also in Zhu and Liu, Shuihu Zhuan Ziliao Huibian p.693).

With their focus on the history of Han Chinese, the stories grew in popularity during the reign of the foreign Mongol emperors of the Yuán Dynasty (AD During the succeeding Míng Dynasty, an interest in plays and novels resulted in further expansions and retelling of the stories.
The earliest attempt to combine these stories into a written work was Sān Guó Zhì Píng Huà (三國誌評話), literally "Story of Sanguozhi", published sometime between 1321 and 1323.
This version combined themes of magic, myth, and morality to appeal to the peasant class.
