Lucassie Arragutainaq, from Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, said, “Since the whales could not get away, two things could happen – the polar bears would get them or the whales would die.” Beluga whales, like other whale species, seals and fish, are considered traditional food of coastal indigenous Canadians.

Sanikiluaq's environment committee wants Sanikiluaq to be acknowedged as a community that would be affected by the project, and wants a say in all impact studies.
Sanikiluaq also asked for the entire James Bay and Hudson Bay region to be studied.
In the early 1990s, Sanikiluaq opposed the damming of the Great Whale River for a massive hydroelectric project because of concerns over the negative effect on water currents, ice and marine life around the Belcher Islands.

One of the few Nunavut regions in which trees can eke out an existence in the thin soil (primarily on the south-facing slopes of valleys) the Sanikiluaq Planning Region is characterized by some coastal cliffs of 50 to 70 metres in height on what is otherwise relatively flat tundra.
The archeological record of the Sanikiluaq region is somewhat distinct from that of many other parts of Nunavut, in that the first Inuit (Tuniit, or Dorset Culture) presence dates only to about 500 B.C., versus as early as 4,000 to 5,000 years ago in some more northern and western parts of the territory.
The NPC recognizes that Nunavut's economy must continue to grow, but it is also responsible for ensuring that this development is sustainable and that the growth is compatible with the traditional hunting economy.

SANIKILUAQ — As Quebec prepares for a massive new hydroelectric project on rivers flowing into James Bay, the people of Sanikiluaq say Nunavut must ensure that their voices are heard.
Sanikiluaq’s environment committee wants the Nunavut government to lobby for the idea that Hudson Bay and James Bay be considered one region — a massive inland sea.
He says Sanikiluaq and the Nunavut government should come up with an action plan together, so that the community’s voice will be heard this time.

As previously noted, the distance between Sanikiluaq and Montréal is 799 air miles, and the distance between Kuujjuarapik and Montréal is 698 air miles, a difference of approximately 15 percent.

The Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) Board of Directors unanimously passed a resolution at their meeting in Sanikiluaq last night, Nov. 3, to study the feasibility of building an Inuit-owned drug and alcohol treatment centre for Inuit in Nunavut.
NTI is also directed to explore the feasibility of partnering with the Government of Nunavut and the Government of Canada on the building and operation of the proposed facility.
The resolution calls for the principal treatment centre to be built in one region of Nunavut, with an associated facility for assessment and follow-up care located in each of the other two regions.
