Atatürk promised the Kurds of Urfa that they could organize their own state in the East if they helped him defeat the European armies that were attempting to seize parts of the dead Ottoman Empire.

Speaking as someone who has contributed a fair amount of content to the original Edessa article, I have to admit Edessa, Greece does have a measure of significance in its own right.
The info at Sanli Urfa was originally at the end of the Edessa article, I moved it to a separate article over a year ago, for reasons I now forget...probably because the ancient city is more well known than Sanli Urfa, I guess.
There are examples like Ashkelon, which has recently had two separate articles merged, that suggest Sanli Urfa and Edessa should be re-merged too.
