 Santa Ana River Watershed Overview
The headwaters for the Santa Ana River and its tributaries are in the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains to the north and the San Gorgonio and San Jacinto Mountains to the east.
The floodplains along the river were the first to be developed because the flat land could be easily irrigated by diverting the perennial flows from the Santa Ana River.
The upper elevations of the San Gabriel, the San Bernardino and, to lesser extent, the Santa Ana Mountains are dominated by conifer forests interspersed with mixed woodlands.
