The Santa Barbara Channel is that part of the Pacific Ocean which separates the mainland of California from the northern Channel Islands.
It is generally south of the city of Santa Barbara, and west of the city of Ventura.
In 1969, the Santa Barbara Channel was the site of a major oil spill from high pressure oil leaking through faults and cracks leading from the drilling zone.

Catalog of Santa Barbara Earthquakes, 1800-1950
Even then, the Santa Barbara area was on the edge of the network, and the azimuthal distribution of seismographs was not optimal for locating earthquakes with a precision of better than about 10 km.
Santa Barbara, located as it is between the sea to the south and the mountains to the north - and only scattered ranches to the west and east, is, in effect, only one datum for any given earthquake.
The earthquake of 1812 is regarded as one of the largest earthquakes in California history, based evidently on the size of the felt area, the extensive destruction to missions in Santa Barbara County, and the report of seismic sea waves.

The best source of information documenting and mapping their presence in the Santa Barbara Channel is a report which documents the presence of over 2,000 seeps in State waters in the Santa Barbara Channel alone (State Lands Commission, 1978).
There is insufficient data in the Santa Maria Basin to estimate either the number of seeps, their location or the quantity of seepage.
MMS has partnered with the County of Santa Barbara to collect additional tarball samples along the shorelines of the Channel and North of Point Conception.

The Santa Barbara Channel study (SBC) is a closely articulated program involving both observational and computational techniques to obtain the best estimate of the physical oceanographic conditions in the Santa Barbara Channel.
Regional Coverage The CTD surveys were made within the Santa Barbara Channel and the Santa Maria Basin, primarily along cross-shelf transects.
The transects in the Santa Maria Basin (AB, SA, and AR) were not occupied at all until later in the Study.

Transport Over the Inner-Shelf of the Santa Barbara Channel (PC-00-02-14)
The Santa Barbara channel is a transition zone between the cool upwelling circulation off the northern California coast and the warm re-circulating flow within the Southern California Bight.
The SBC is roughly 100 km long by 50 km wide and is oriented east-west.
Concern over management of the Channel’s mineral resources and the fate of potentially spilled oil prompted the MMS to fund studies of large-scale circulation patterns within the SBC.
