  Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, Rome
St Cecilia, described in her Life as "Coeli Lilia" (the Lily of Heaven), was one of the early Christian martyrs who were always much venerated in Rome and became the subject of numerous legends.
It is of basilican type, with forecourt, porch (facade by Ferdinando Fuga, 1725), a Romanesque campanile, a wide nave with rows of columns, chancel and apse.
In the chancel are a marble ciborium by Arnolfo di Cambio (1283) and a figure of St Cecilia carved by Stefano Maderna in 1600 (a year after the discovery of a tomb containing the body of a young girl in this position).

Trastevere is considered one of the most authentic districts of Rome (whatever that may be), and by this it is generally understood it is dirty and half the streets look like they're about to tumble down as paint flakes gently descend like snow on unsuspecting pedestrians.
The miracle of Santa Cecilia is that the artist Stefano Maderno disinterred her body in 1599 and found it miraculously preserved- with the decapitated head intact.
Around Santa Cecilia it is still possible to get a feel of what Trastevere must've been like, though obviously not in its poverty-stricken days, and the calm traffic-free streets are relaxing to stroll compared to most of Rome, with the idyll only disturbed by the occasional roaring scooter or electric minibus.

 Why Cecilia?
Those who consider Cecilia the patron saint of music are often not aware of the fact that it took just over a thousand years to bring her into a close association with that art.
The present church of Santa Cecilia owes its existence to Pope Paschal I, who in 821 located the tomb of Cecilia in the Catacombs of St. and had the saint's body "translated" (moved) from there to the church in Trastevere, which he re-built in her honor.
The source of the connection between Cecilia martyred in Sicily around 176 AD and the art of which she has become the patron saint is obscure almost to the point of extinction, and does not seem to date back much before the 15th century.

Across the river from the centre of town, on the right bank of the Tiber, the district of TRASTEVERE was the artisan area of the city in classical times, neatly placed for the trade that came upriver from Ostia and was unloaded nearby.
Outside the city walls, Trastevere (the name means literally "across the Tiber") was for centuries heavily populated by immigrants, and this separation lent the neighbourhood a strong identity that lasted well into the last century.
The obvious way to approach Trastevere is to cross over from Isola Tiberina or from the pedestrian Ponte Sisto at the end of Via Giulia, both of which leave you five minutes from the heart of the neighbourhood.

Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, Italy. Travel guide & tourist information by Hostelbookers.com
The church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere (daily 10am–noon & 4–5.30pm), on Via Anicia, is a cream, rather sterile church – apart from a pretty front courtyard – whose antiseptic eighteenth-century appearance belies its historical associations.
A church was originally built here over the site of the second-century home of St Cecilia, whose husband Valerian was executed for refusing to worship Roman gods and who herself was subsequently persecuted for Christian beliefs.
The story has it that Cecilia was locked in the caldarium of her own baths for several days but refused to die, singing her way through the ordeal (Cecilia is patron saint of music).
