Santa Clara Valley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Silicon Valley is roughly synonymous with the Santa Clara Valley, although since the former is as much a state of mind as an actual location, people often refer to parts of the San Francisco Peninsula as being part of Silicon Valley as well.
The northern end of the Santa Clara Valley is at the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay, and the southern end is in the vicinity of Gilroy.
The valley is bounded by the Santa Cruz Mountains on the southwest and by the Diablo Range on the northeast.

The physical geography of Santa Clara County, situated between the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west and the Diablo Mountain Range to the east, was formed quite recently in geological history.

The Santa Clara Valley's "Appointment with Destiny"
Santa Clara County is not a single-dimensional bedroom community for San Francisco to the northwest, for instance; it has industry and other economic resources of its own, including the huge plants of Ford, Lockheed, General Electric and IBM (which Khrushchev toured during his 1958 visit to the United States).
Santa Clara's population is not a homogeneous slice of society; rather it is a mixture of wealthy, middle class and poor, city and rural people, white and fl and Mexican-Americans.
Santa Clara County's professional planners were given little in the way of clear cut public policy guidelines for preservation of the valley's resources in the face of the developers' insistent demands.

Santa Clara County Genealogy - The Santa Clara Valley - 1887
Santa Clara Valley, with its resources, and San José, with its beauties, are as household words to the Californian.
In the era that measured theexistence of this ancient river, it had borne in its turbid waters the disintegrations of the regions it traversed, and in the ooze and slime of the lakes that intercepted its course and stilled its current, was the decaying mold of generations of forests that had flourished on its banks.
In this description of the capabilities and climate of Santa Clara Valley, I have substantially described San José; for this is her environment, these are her resources, this the rich setting, of which the "Garden City" is the central gem.

Scott’s Valley is located on the other side of the mountains in the direction the rain usually comes from.
Although Scott’s Valley was too far away for me to set up rain gauges, I did have access to their automated rainfall data via the Internet.
I can use the data from the first two storms, along with the fact that there should be no difference in rainfall amounts when there is no wind and consequently no rain shadow effect, to make an equation to determine the ratio of rainfall between one side of the mountains and the rain shadow side.
