The Asistencia is sometimes referred to as "San Luis Obispo County's third mission." It was located at the top of the Cuesta Grade (north of San Luis Obispo) and also served as an outpost, chapel, and storehouse.
The Santa Margarita Asistencia was secularized along with Mission San Luís Obispo in 1835, suffered the same neglect that many mission properties did after that time.

The asistencia sits on private land and is not available for public viewing except by special arrangement (I went on a tour sponsored by The California Mission Studies Association).

The "asistencia" still stands near the main ranch buildings on the Ranch that was acquired by Joaquin Estrada in September, 1841.

At Santa Barbara, they have chamfered corners, and occasionally, as in the colonnade of the patio at San Antonio de Padus, they are built of adobe; but generally burnt bricks were used.
The same effect is produced in store at the Santa Margarita chapel (Plate 16), in which the arches of both doors and windows are deeply recessed.

Las Flores asistencia was built around 1823, together with a lodging house used as a halfway house between San Luis Rey and San Juan Capistrano Missions.
The asistencia, located on what was known as the "San Pedro Rancho," was under thejurisdiction of Mission San Luis Rey.
Father Peyri reported on Oct. 7, 1827, that at the asistencia corn, wheat, and barley were raised and cattle were grazed at nearby Las Pulgas.

In the baptismal register at San Luis Obispo, the first date of which is in 1772, the original names are given of many of the rancherias of that Mission, some of which are still retained in local names to this day.
These are ruins of the church of a vista or asistencia of San Luis, and a padre went regularly from the Mission to say mass for the Indians there.
To the southwest are the remains of a building of boulders, brick, and cement, exactly of the same style as the asistencia building of Santa Margarita.

On December 14, 1818 the French privateer Hipólito Bouchard, sailing under an Argentinian flag, brought his ships Argentine and Santa Rosa to within sight of the Mission and sent forth an envoy with a demand for provisions.
The garrison soldiers were aware that Bouchard (California's only pirate) had recently conducted raids on the settlements at Monterey and Santa Barbara, so the demand was rebuffed and threats of reprisals against the pirate band were made.
This facility, situated halfway between San Juan Capistrano and the Mission at San Luís Rey, was intended to act primarily as a rest stop for traveling clergy.

The road crosses the Santa Maria River above the line where the bridge is to be built, the track, for the present, being laid in the bed of the river.
The same month the line was completed to Santa Maria, the Pacific Coast Railroad Company incorporated in San Francisco for the purpose of constructing a narrow gauge railroad from the southern terminus of the San Luis Obispo & Santa Maria Valley Railroad to Santa Barbara, a distance of 80 miles.
The Santa Fe then bought Southern Pacific's only competition in the San Joaquin Valley, Spreckels' San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley "Peoples Railroad." Rate wars became the order of the day to the immense benefit of valley rail users who were offered lower fares and transcontinental service.
