The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, Lombardy - lastminute.com
Milan is founded around a historic nucleus radiating from the Cathedral, with a star-shaped axis of arteries spreading through modern suburbs to the ring road.
Milans economic success was founded at the end of the 19th century, when the metal factories and the rubber industries moved in, replacing agriculture and mercantile trading as the citys main sources of income.
Milans position at the heart of a network of canals, which provided the irrigation for the Lombard plains and the important trade links between the north and south, became less important as industry took over and the waterways were filled.

Santa Maria delle Grazie, Italy. Travel guide & tourist information by Hostelbookers.com
The displays of glass phials, kitchen utensils and jewellery from Roman Milan are compelling, and though there's a scarcity of larger objects, there is a colossal head of Jove, found near the castle, a torso of Hercules and a smattering of mosaic pavements unearthed around the city.
First built as a Gothic church by the fifteenth-century architect Solari, Santa Maria delle Grazie was partially rebuilt under a dissatisfied Lodovico Sforza by the more up-to-date Bramante, who tore down Solari's chancel and replaced it with a massive dome supported by an airy Renaissance cube.
When the monks complained that the face of Judas was still unfinished, Leonardo replied that he had been searching for over a year among the city's criminals for a sufficiently evil face, and that if he didn't find one he would use the face of the prior.

Cenacolo - Santa Maria delle Grazie
The Church and Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie were built between 1465 and 1482 to designs by Guiniforte Solari.
Ludovico Sforza's vast program, which also envisaged the replacement of the façade and part of the nave and aisles, was never concluded for the sudden death of Beatrice in 1497 and the fall of the Sforza regime in 1499 interrupted work, although the apse, the sacristy and the Last Supper appear to have been finished.
Today they are still considered extremely important works and are significant examples of Renaissance Milan despite the transformation and damage caused by bombing on August 16, 1943, which destroyed the library and the cloister of the dead.

The Refectory with the Last Supper after restoration by LEONARDO da Vinci
After Ludovico il Moro was made duke of Milan in 1494, he decided to make the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie his family's burial place.
After conquering Milan in 1499, the French king is even said to have expressed the desire to bring it to France, but his advisors were apparently able to dissuade him on the grounds that, given the technological conditions of the time, transporting the painting would have been tantamount to destroying it.
In 1943, during an air raid, a bomb exploded in the refectory of the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie and destroyed the roof and the wall to the right of the Last Supper right down to the foundations; the work of art, protected by sand bags, fortunately survived this catastrophe largely unscathed.

Leonardo started work on the fresco - judged by many the genius's greatest work - in 1496 when he received a commission from Ludovico who, after having enlarged the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, decided to enlarge and decorate the Refectory (Dining Hall) of the adjacent Dominican monastery.
Leonardo painted it using an unconventional technique, sometimes without letting of a paintbrush the whole day long, other times not picking up a paintbrush for days at a time.
All the lines of the rigorously symmetrical composition converge on Him in perfect perspective, including the gestures and glances of the apostles, each of whom is portrayed reacting differently according to his psychological state, to the words of Christ: "One of you would betray me".
