 History of Santa Rosa Island
The first written record concerning Santa Rosa Island is found in a journal of the expedition of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who sailed to the coast of Southern California in 1542-1543 for the King of Spain.
Although Santa Rosa Island had been claimed for the Spain by Cabrillo, it was the 1793 English expedition of George Vancouver which standardized and finalized the names of the eight Southern California islands, including that of Santa Rosa.
Island Chumash society was vulnerable to both diseases and economic changes introduced by European contact, and as a result, their numbers greatly diminished.

As island spotted skunks and island foxes have substantial overlap in dietary, spatial, and temporal resource use (Crooks and Van Vuren 1995), the decrease in resource competition associated with the recent drastic decline in the Santa Rosa Island fox population may have contributed to a large increase in the skunk population on the island.

 Ubiquitous Coastal-Tar Residues on Santa Rosa Island, Offshore Southern California
A cooperative field trip with personnel from Coastal and Marine Geology (CMG) and the National Park Service (NPS) was undertaken in September on Santa Rosa Island, one of the jewels of the Channel Islands National Park off Southern California.
The purpose was to assess presence of tar residues on all accessible coastlines of the island, collect floating tar residues on beaches as well as residues fixed to rocky shores near high-tide lines, fingerprint collected samples geochemically, and determine tar sources.
Although tar was expected and was found on the north-facing shorelines, residues were also common on the south-facing shorelines adjacent to the Santa Barbara channel where natural oil seeps and oil-production platforms are prolific.

Prior to this, settlement mobility was the dominant individual strategy for buffering resource shortfalls on Santa Rosa Island, persisting throughout much of the Holocene as an "Evolutionary Stable Strategy".
I argue that decreased settlement mobility after AD 500 was one response to increased regional violence related to subsistence stress and the introduction of the bow and arrow.

--In midafternoon on October 7, 1951, while sitting on a rock at the head of a canyon on Santa Rosa Island, Santa Barbara County, California, I noticed a flock of perhaps one hundred Vaux Swifts (Chaetura vauxi) pass directly in front of me on the same level.
The flock was loose in that the birds were so separated as to require at least a full minute to pass before me. They were all traveling toward the southeast.
This species has heretofore not been recorded from this island and apparently the date is quite late for the fall migration.-- J.
