Santa Ynez Mountains - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Santa Ynez Mountains are a portion of the Transverse Ranges, part of the Pacific Coast Ranges of the west coast of North America, and are one of the northernmost mountain ranges in Southern California.
The mountains extend from an eastern terminus at the canyon of the Ventura River and Matilija Creek, north of Ojai, west across the Santa Barbara County line, to immediately north of the city of Santa Barbara, and then west, paralleling the coast, to the city of Lompoc and Vandenberg Air Force Base.
In the late spring and early summer the mountains and areas below to the south are subject to occasional intense sundowner winds, a type of föhn wind in which the air is heated adiabatically and dried as it moves downslope.

The division between the Santa Ynez and Topatopa Mountains is arbitrary, since the Santa Ynez fault, and the characteristic sedimentary thicknesses and structures north and south of the fault seen in the Santa Ynez Mountains are continued into the Topatopa Mountains; the Santa Ynez fault dies out eastward north-northeast of Fillmore.
The Santa Susana Mountains lie largely south of the Santa Clara River and the Santa Ynez Uplift, although east of Piru, rocks underlying the range extend north of the river, disappearing beneath the San Cayetano thrust.

 SB Nature--The Mountain Wall
From the perspective of the city, however, the abruptness of the mountain wall as it rises nearly 4,000 feet to its crest at La Cumbre Peak, the spiny layerings of sandstone, the insipid coloring of the chaparral, combine to convey a sense of inhospitality and dullness.
The small fuzzy leaves of the yerba santa and the purple, fl and white sages are predominantly gray in color, but in the springtime the delicate purple buds of the sages and their overwhelming aromas make the soft chaparral community a treat to be sampled again and again.
Although the mountain wall does not have the immediate charm of the city’s Mission-style architecture nor the Mediterranean grace of palm-lined Cabrillo boulevard, it is the Santa Ynez Mountains, as much as the sea, that define the city’s character.
