Nuevo Santander was situated along the eastern coast of New Spain between the Pánuco River and the Bay of Espiritu Santo at the mouth of the San Antonio River, a distance of about 120 leagues.
In Nuevo Santander the Indians were to be evangelized and urbanized in pueblo-missions; in Alta California the same purpose was to be accomplished in mission-pueblos.
In view of the principles and precedents established in Nuevo Santander, and in view of the policy of the viceregal government with respect to racial integration between Indians and gente de razón, the legal arguments advocated by the Fernandinos in their opposition to Pueblo San Jose and the Villa de Branciforte seem relatively unimportant.

In 1580 six ships, carrying 600 to 700 Spanish, Italian and Irish soldiers, left Santander and sailed for Dingle.
On the Dingle Peninsula the inland promontory forts at Caherconree and Faha (the latter being the highest fort in Ireland at 2500 feet or 762m O.D.) may be of this period, as may some of the uninvestigated coastal cliff-top promontory forts, of which there are at least twenty on Corca Dhuibhne.
The Dingle Peninsula appears to have experienced something of a population explosion during the Bronze Age, if the quantity of monuments of that period surviving in Corca Dhuibhne are anything to judge by.

 Bay of Biscay 1997
The return journey promised more than the outward, as we were leaving Santander at 11.00am, meaning we would be crossing the whole of the Bay of Biscay during daylight.
Most of the daylight on this journey was spent crossing the English Channel and passing the Brest Peninsula of France, crossing the bulk of the Bay of Biscay, generally the most interesting area, during the hours of darkness.
We estimated that we would have reached the deep water of Biscay at around an hour after nightfall, and would have passed out of it by around an hour before sunrise, so we had just missed what was probably the most productive area, and hence had not seen quite as much as we had hoped.
