Santee is a city located in San Diego County, California.
A middle-class suburb of San Diego, Santee is known as one of the more politically right-wing cities in Southern California, earning it the derisive nickname of "Klantee" (after the Ku Klux Klan, which has prospered in San Diego long after its near-destruction in most of the country).
According to estimates by the San Diego Association of Governments, the median household income of Santee in 2004 was $67,342 (not adjusted for inflation).

It is said that members of the Santee Sioux Indian tribe were responsible for "the great Minnesota massacre in 1862." As a result of this, they were banished to the northwestern plains along the Crow Creek area in the Dakota Territory, where they experienced much suffering.
The Santee, however, preferred living in tents and dressing in their native costumes, complete with tomahawk and scalping knife, rather than in the frame houses, citizen's clothing, and work with farming tools and pencils that were available to them.
Santee Indians were not able to acquire a title to their lands.

The Santee Sioux were the "frontier guardians of the Sioux domain" that ranged from the Santee's home in Minnesota across the plains and to the northern Rocky Mountains in Montana and south through the northwestern part of Nebraska.
The Santee's defeat by the Chippewas at the Battle of Kathio in the late 1700s forced them to move to the southern half of the state which would bring them into close contact and eventually conflict with the white settlers.
Santee leaders, Little Crow, Medicine Bottle, Shakopee and Big Eagle debated whether to take the offensive against the "bluecoats." The young men, hungry and cynical, eventually convinced their disillusioned leaders that their fate was inevitable.
