Santhali children can take a peek into the Nehru-Gandhi history and the relationship between an illustrious father and a firebrand daughter through Jawaharlal Nehru’s letters to Indira Gandhi penned while he was in Allahabad jail during the freedom struggle.
This is one of the reasons why even after the language was included in the Eighth Schedule, very few children from Santhali families were opting for it as the medium of instruction at the primary level,” Hansda said.
Apart from those living in the state, Santhali children brought up in other states and neighbouring countries, who are not aware of the rich tribal culture, might also get interested in learning the language.

It has already been amended three times so far: adding Sindhi to the original list in 1969, three more (Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali) in 1993; and four more (Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santhali) in the 100th Amendment to the Constitution in 2003.
The last expansion was unique in two respects: for the first time, two tribal (‘spoken’) languages were added; one (Bodos) owed its inclusion to “a part of the memorandum of settlement between the militant Bodos, Assam Government and the Centre,” and “to keep the balance,” another one (Santhali) was added from another tribal area.
During the 2003 debate, L. Advani (then deputy PM) alerted the country that up to 35 more languages could be added to the Eighth Schedule, once the ongoing discussions with the linguistic experts are completed.

Moreover, it is the same BJP led government in Jharkhand that never moved a resolution in the assembly for recognition of Santhali as a national language despite the fact that such a resolution was unanimously adopted by the West Bengal legislative assembly.
The same BJP led government in the state has continuously been ignoring the demand for establishing primary schools and appointment of teachers for imparting education to students in their mother languages.
