The region is composed of four (4) provinces: Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur; three (3) cities: Butuan, Surigao and Bislig; seventy (70) municipalities and 1,346 barangays.
It traverses eight (8) municipalities: Alegria, Tubod, Mainit and Sison in the Province of Surigao del Norte and Tubay, Santiago, Jabonga and Kitchara in Agusan del Norte.
Agusan Norte, Surigao Norte and Surigao Sur posted negative growth rates in the 2000-2001 period, with Surigao Sur posting the biggest decrease in exports (81.31 percent).

BUTUAN CITY - Eight people, three of them children, died while two others were injured after the overloaded car they were riding in rammed into a concrete bridge in Santiago, Agusan del Norte around 3 a.m.
Senior Superintendent Juan Duan Awayan, Agusan del Norte police chief, said the victims were on their way to Surigao City for a vacation and were traveling on board the car being driven by Melito Diez, 37 when the tragedy occurred.
Awayan identified the survivors as Joan Lamata, 27 and Joah Lamata.
