Santiago do Cacém was recently upgraded to city rank and is capital of a municipality with 1059 km
It was one of the few that remained unchanged in the 1935 municipal heraldery reordering, having been “standartized” recently, undoubtlessly when Santiago do Cacém was upgraded to city rank and minor changes were introduced in the flag.

Solid Waste Recycling and Municipal Management in the Municipality of Santiago: International Development Research ...
The reason for this modification was the fact that the municipality scenario on recycling had changed, as during 1998 the Municipality pushed through a programme for the recovery of inorganic material (mainly paper, cardboard and glass) in the central and north-western sector of the communal area.
This initiative is also linked to an existing project in the municipality on environmental education in the municipality educational facilities (Green School Projects) where activities for the environmental improvements of the school and the neighbourhood are conducted followed by programmes of inorganic recycling and compost making.
In summary, this study was very beneficial to provide orientation for municipal and management around the issue of the management of organic waste making it possible that this important environmental project will be implemented shortly in the Santiago commune and that it may be replicated in other, mainly urban, communes of our country.

Vol. 4 No. 1: Reemergence of Dengue in Cuba: A 1997 Epidemic in Santiago de Cuba
After 15 years of absence, dengue reemerged in the municipality of Santiago de Cuba because of increasing migration to the area by people from disease-endemic regions, a high level of vector infestation, and the breakdown of eradication measures.
The municipality is located in Santiago de Cuba province, in the eastern part of the country, and has several risk factors for the reemergence of dengue: limited water supply, inadequate eradication efforts, high vector infestation, and increasing migration of people from Latin American and Caribbean disease-endemic countries to the municipality.
In three of the first seven cases, dengue-2 virus was detected by polymerase chain reaction (10) and was confirmed by viral isolation and identification using C6/36 cell line and monoclonal antibodies to the four dengue serotypes.

During I. Santiago's term, the Municipality of Buayan was renamed - in honor of its great pioneer - General Paulino Santos.
Thus, a House Bill No. 5862 was passed in the lower house of Congress converting Gen. Santos Municipality into a city and renaming a newly born city as Rajah Buayan City in honor of the once upon a time benevolent ruler of Southern Philippines.
Several other barrios in the southern part of Cotabato became newly established municipalities and all of these were due to the great efforts of Congressman James L. Chiongbian being the "Father of the City" who really did a big help in transforming an infant province and the city of Gen. Santos a progressive place.
