Through its two princial tributaries, the North Santiam and the South Santiam rivers it drains a large area of the Cascade Range at the eastern side of the Willamette Valley east of Salem and Corvallis.
The main course of the river is short, formed in the Willamette Valley by the confluence of the North and South Santiam rivers on the border between Linn and Marion counties approximately 8 mi (13 km) northeast of Albany.
The North Santiam is impounded to form the 400-ft (120 m) deep Detroit Lake in the Cascades.

Its 108,000 residents are supplied with drinking water from the north portion of the Santiam River, which has a watershed of 490,000 acres stretching from the Cascade Mountains to the city's intake on Geren Island (in the middle of the river) in the Town of Stayton.
Because the vast majority of land within the watershed of the north Santiam River is forested and there are few roads through much of the area, there is only a small risk of contamination to the water source.
To date, the MOU, titled "North Santiam River Cooperative Water Quality Monitoring Program," has involved a joint study between the agencies of the relationships between the forestry use trends in the federal and state lands and turbidity (a measure of cloudiness) in the water of the Santiam River.

The North Santiam Watershed Council (NSWC) is a citizen-based, stakeholder created, non-profit organization concerned about healthy rivers and streams as well as human communities in the North Santiam and Santiam River Basin.
The headwaters of the North Santiam River are in Mt. Jefferson and the watershed drains approximately 766 square miles in area over 92 river miles.
Although the river is very healthy overall, it is listed on the Clean Water Act 303 (d) list for summer temperatures exceeding standards.

The river is so slow down there that this drift takes a long time with low water conditions.
There are many club members who are willing to share their knowledge of river activities, and also many new members who are interested in learning about this particular river.
One very fresh steelhead was caught right in the middle of the river while we had boats casting to the ledges along the shore.

In 1925 the first fish hatchery on the South Santiam River began operations about 5 miles upstream from today's present site, rearing annually approximately 100,000 Spring Chinook in dirt ponds for release into the South Santiam River.

I was off the river most of the week but the bank anglers were doing real well on the summer steelhead in the mornings and evenings.
The river will probably be real busy over the next couple of days as everyone has had cabin fever for awhile.
