A Santorum spokesman was kind enough to provide even more clarity last year, telling me, ``It's an open secret that you have Harvard University and MIT that tend to tilt to the left in terms of academic biases.
Santorum seemed to be all but gloating when he blamed Democrats, liberal academics, and everything Boston for pedophilic priests.

Rick Santorum always pointed to the end, to the campaign's final weeks, when he would be poised for another one of his comeback victories.
Stuck at 40 percent in surveys and anxious to draw Casey into a public debate, Santorum shifted his TV ad campaign last week back to illegal immigration, one of his sharper differences with an opponent who can be difficult to pin down.

 Santorum's Family Affair - FactCheck.org
Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Rick Santorum shows his children claiming that political opponents have criticized him "for moving us to Washington," and that "they criticized us for attending a Pennsylvania public school over the Internet." In fact, the critique was of Santorum, not his children.
The ad is Santorum's response to accusations by local officials that he exploited a Pennsylvania program that paid tens of thousands of dollars in tuition for his children to be educated via a publicly supported Internet charter school while the family was living in Virginia.
If all politics are indeed local, then where Santorum lives and who pays for his children's education may be at least as serious a re-election issue for him as Iraq or immigration.

As Sen. Santorum observed, if the court strikes down laws against sodomy on the basis of a so-called "right to privacy," could not the same reasoning be applied to same-sex marriage, polygamy, incest and other "private" sexual arrangements among consenting adults?

Carl Pope: Taking the Initiative: April 21, 2005 - Sierra Club
Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, one of the most ardent advocates of the "nuclear option," which would turn the Senate from a forum where the minority has a robust right to offer amendments and debate issues into a majority-driven autocracy like today's House, seems anxious.
Combined with other poll results that show people are very unhappy with Congress overall, and even less happy about the Terri Schiavo affair, Santorum is reportedly urging his leadership to slow down from forcing a vote on the issue -- in part, I suspect, because he is not certain that they have the votes.
Although my hope is that, once these issues get exposed in the light of public day, Santorum and the leadership might back down, they seem to have learned no real lesson from public dismay about their heavy-handedness and lust for power -- except to be more secretive.
