Santos-Dumont was born in Cabengu, a village in the Brazilian town of Palmira (Today the place is Santos Dumont in the state of Minas Gerais.) He grew up as the youngest of eleven children on a coffee plantation owned by his family in the state of São Paulo.
The city of Dumont, in the state of São Paulo, near Ribeirão Preto is so named because it is located where it used to be one the largest coffee farms in the world, between 1870 and 1890.
The Rodovia Santos Dumont is a highway in the state of São Paulo.

A diminutive man of fierce determination and unpredictable moods, Santos was determined to gain recognition as the leading aeronaut of France.
Between 1901 and 1905, Santos was satisfied to enjoy his fame and to titillate the Parisian public by landing his dirigible in front of his house just off the Champs-Elysées or at his favorite restaurant in the Bois de Boulogne.
Inspired by Voisin's use of box-like structures to provide stability, (see Voisin webpage and model) Santos designed one of the strangest and least promising flying machines ever seen, which he christened the I4bis to indicate its continuity with the fourteen dirigibles that had preceded it.
