It's her ragged breathing that drives the narrative along, the uninterpretable play of emotion across her face that provides the film with much of its nerve-wracking suspense, as we are continually invited to try to predict exactly which way this silent, stony young zealot will jump.
Sivan reveals much of this sweetness through repeated images of Sri Lanka's glorious natural beauty -- lush foliage, dripping water -- and the human interactions her mission forces upon her.
Some people thought that Malli should give up her life for her country, for example; some people thought that simply by making the film from her point of view, I was saying her point of view was right.

Santosh Sivan seems to believe the same and while it makes the film satisfying on an emotional level, one has to wonder if it doesn't compromise the story on an intellectual level.
