Sanuki (讃岐国; -no kuni) was an old province of Japan on the island of Shikoku, with the same boundaries as modern Kagawa Prefecture.
In the Sengoku period Sanuki was ruled by the Miyoshi clan.
In the Edo Period Sanuki was divided into five; three han in Takamatsu, Marugame, Tadotsu, the Shogun's direct holding and a part of Tsuyama han whose mainland was on Honshū.

The forces of Go-Shirakawa defeated the retired emperor Sutoku making the way for emperor Nijo to be appointed to the throne and Go-Shirakawa becoming the new cloistered emperor in 1158.
Sutoku was banished to Sanuki[?] province of Shikoku, Fujiwara no Yorinaga was killed in battle, and Minamoto no Tameyoshi and Taira no Tadamasa were executed.
Minamoto no Yoshitomo became head of the Minamoto after the death of his father and together with Taira no Kiyomori, succeeded in establishing the two samurai clans as new politcal powers in Kyoto.

Motochika was the eldest son of Chosokabe Kunichika and was born at Okô Castle in Tosa Province.

Kūkai was born into an aristocratic family in Sanuki Province (now Kagawa Prefecture) on the northeastern coast of the island of Shikoku in 774.
