Topic: Saor Eire

In the News (Thu 16 Feb 12)

[No title]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Saor Eire was formed around 1967 by members of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) who resigned because of the organizations lack of military activity and with people associated with the Trotskyist, Irish Workers Group.
Saor Eire military activities appear to have been initiated with weapons stolen in a heist from the Parker and Hale munitions factory in Birmingham.
During a bank robbery in 1970 Saor Eire murdered Garda Fallon an Irish Policeman, by coincidence the weapons used in the murder were Star pistols of the type from the Parker Hale Munitions heist in Birmingham.

Saor Eire styled itself as an urban guerilla group, as it believed that the decisive struggle was taking place in cities amongst the working class.
Saor Eire's concentration on bank robberies meant that gangsters on the fringes of the Republican movement were soon playing a leading role in the organization at the expense of the more politically orientated members.
At her funeral, despite the presence of over 200 police officers, Saor Eire activists fired three volleys of shots over her coffin draped with the flag of the Trotskyist United Secretariat of the Fourth International; and the Irish Trotskyist DR O Connor Lysaght read the oration.

The highpoint for radical republicanism, represented mainly by the IRA, was from 1929 to 1934; the zenith was the organisation’s launch of the Saor Éire programme in 1931.
The catholic hierarchy’s denunciation of the IRA for its Saor Éire programme, allied to a suspicion of communism among many of its rank and file, gradually forced the organisation to water down its radical rhetoric.
The organisation split in 1934 with the most prominent socialists leaving to form the Republican Congress, which declared that an Irish republic would not be realised unless capitalism in Ireland was ‘uprooted’.
