Topic: Saqsin

 NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Saqsin
Saqsin was a medieval city that flourished from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries.
Saqsin may be an Arabized version of Sarighsin, Turkic for "Yellow City", though a less cumbersome etymology would be "Saka Land", with namesake capital.
Sarai Batu was excavated by a number of expeditions exploring the center of the city, and was probably located on the periphery of the original Saksin.

Saqsin (aka Saksin, Saksin-Bolgar) was a medieval city that flourished from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries.
It was situated in the Volga Delta (modern-day Astrakhan Oblast), or in the Lower Volga, and was known in pre-Mongol times as Saksin-Bolgar, which in Mongol times became Sarai Batu.

 Australian Information from Wikipedia
A powerful polity of Volga Bulgaria once flourished where the Kama river joins the Volga, while Khazaria controlled the lower stretches of the river.
Such Volga cities as Atil, Saqsin, or Sarai were among the largest in the medieval world.
The river served as an important trade route connecting Scandinavia, Rus', and Volga Bulgaria with Khazaria and Persia.

Atil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ibn Hawqal and al-Muqaddasi refer to Atil after 969, indicating that it may have been rebuilt.
Al-Biruni (mid-1000s) reported that Atil was again in ruins, and did not mention the later city of Saqsin which was built nearby, so it is possible that this new Atil was only destroyed in the middle of the eleventh century.
The archeological remains of Atil have never been positively identified.

 Mongol invasion of Rus
Alternatively, some hypothesize, that some Kipchaks and Russians were forcibly relocated to Bulgaria's land.
Undoubtedly, some Bulgars were forcibly relocated to the territory of modern Astrakhan Oblast, the population of which was previously nomadic (but see, e.g., Itil and Saqsin).
Volga Bulgaria's Muslim community preferred to call themselves Muslims (Möselmannar), but used the word Bolghar to distinguish themselves from nomadic Moslem Kipchaks.

 Current Issues in Khazar Studies
The Russian archaeologist Yevgenia Schneidstein has also proposed that a hill in Samosdelka, where red brick has been found, is Atil.
Dmitry Vasiliev came to the conclusion that Samosdelka is the site of two cities: Saqsin in the upper layers and Atil in the lower layers.
The layers which are thought to be from Atil were uncovered in 2006 and date to the 9th and 10th centuries and have Khazarian characteristics.
