The showbreed "Sar" stands between 26 and 30 inches (65-75 cm) in height and weighs 77 to 99 pounds (35-45 kg).
The name comes from the Šar mountain range (Šar Planina) spanning the border of the Macedonia and Kosovo, where he is typically found accompanying and guarding the great sheep flocks as they graze.
It is also believed that the original mountain sheppard dog (based in the Mollos family) was cross bred with wolves during the Middle Ages to create the 'modern' Sar (certainly the modern Sar resembles a wolf in movement).
The dog was the ideal employee, happily adapting to new sheep and new quarters.
Sheep and goat raisers are discovering advantages to owning a Sar when the majority of their predator problems disappear.
The Sar will protect all of its territory and the living creatures within it.

Several villages in the desolate stretches of SarPlanina, that were part or all Macedonian a year ago, are now entirely Albanian.
Further down the mountain to the northeast, the army currently keeps an eye on SarPlanina and anyone who might try to attack from the hills.
It comes from the root verb sarar, "to have dominion." The female form is sara while the male form is sar, denoting human mortals who have dominion through rulership -- kings, queens, princes, and princesses.
As further illustration of why the origins were Semitic consider the name sar as it was used for titles of nobility in the past.
Other examples of the sar title may be found in Akkadian myths.

Also in the fifties and sixties, Frank was the backbone of the SarPlanina Orchestra that saw the likes of musicians such as Mel Dokich, Julius Peskan, Matt Jurisic, Horace Mamala, Tony Markulin, and the late super prima Steve Makarewich.
It was during the mid-fifties to early sixties that Frank and Marty and their SarPlanina Orchestra performed numerous engagements on the WGN television program International Cafe, with Rudy Orisek as the host of the show.

My team's favorite weekend activity was to lay out our military maps and head for a remote area usually in the SarPlanina, the beautiful mountain range that divides Macedonia and Kosovo.
