Ghazni is one of the thirty-four Provinces of Afghanistan.
This province was once the seat of the mighty Ghaznavid Empire, that ruled all of Persian Empire and its eastern territories.
The ethnic make-up of the province is mostly Pashtun with Hazara and Tajiks also present.

The province was one of the first major battlegrounds in the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and remained an active area of guerilla warfare throughout, with local military commander and mujahideen Ismail Khan leading resistance to Soviet rule from 1979 until the Soviet withdawal in 1988 (see the article on the city of Herat for details).
The province is currently (as of November 2003) ruled more or less autocratically by Khan, despite some attempts by the interim central government (headed by Hamid Karzai) to weaken the power of local strongment.
January 10, 2003 The governor of Herat province, Afghanistan, Ismail Khan, placed further restrictions on women's education by banning women being taught by men in privately run courses and by preventing women from attending classes in a building at the same time that men are being taught.

It seems that a number of officials in frontier provinces travel out of the country in vehicles with political and foreign number plates and road passes without the permission of the center [capital].
All governors and security commanders of the provinces are responsible for invalidating all the road passes that have already been distributed.
Kabul authorities complain that the 12 provinces, most notably western Afghanistan's Herat Province under Governor Ismail Khan, have been withholding their customs revenues from the central government.

 Emergency assistance reaches flood victims in Sar-e Pol
KABUL, 20 May 2004 (IRIN) - Following heavy flooding in the northern province of Sar-e Pol, food aid and emergency assistance has been dispatched to badly affected families, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) told IRIN on Thursday.
According to UNAMA, residents of some five remote villages in the Kohistanat district of Sar-e Pol, recently hit by a flash flood, received emergency supplies provided by UNAMA, UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
IRIN is a project of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
