Sara Mingardo (Contralto) - Short Biography
The Italian true contralto, Sara Mingardo, studied in her hometown Venice at the Academy Benedetto Marcello.
Sara Mingardo made her debut in 1987 and appeared since 1989 in the best theatres in Italy, including La Scala in Milan, Teatro Fenice, San Carlo, Teatro Regio, at the Festival of Salzburg, Martina Franca and Switzerland.
Sara Mingardo made her first recording in 1995 with Christophe Rousset, in which she sang the role in Riccardo by Händel.

Sara Mingardo has been creating quite a stir in baroque circles but this is my first chance to catch up with her.
In one sense she may be considered a "typical" baroque singer, in the sense that she uses a completely straight vocal production, from which vibrato has been rigorously excluded, and cultivates a somewhat plangent, nasal sound, with the result that a casual listener might suppose he was listening to a counter-tenor.
Sara Mingardo clearly does not agree and sees no reason to hide her passionately Italian nature, no doubt arguing that there is no reason why Italians of the 17

I took it for granted that Mingardo, an artist of such a rare charisma had at last recorded a solo disc.
She is one of those singers who immediately absorb our attention and brighten up even the most boring opera productions, so it is not hard to imagine that the same qualities would make her solo recital a winner.
To me this disc is still a great opportunity to hear Mingardo in the repertoire she is mainly associated with, but it is a strange collection because many of the samples gathered here don't work too well outside the compositions they are extracted from.

Subject: Sara Mingardo/Rinaldo Alessandrini, St James's, 1Jul99 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" The press publicity for this recital of songs by Monteverdi, Mozart and Schubert suggests that Sara Mingardo is the baroque equivalent of Cecilia Bartoli.
Strangely, Mingardo stuck to her copy most of the time, even though she clearly knew the arias well enough to act with total commitment.
Mingardo sang a set of Mozart songs neatly, with a sense of insecurity and quite a few misplaced umlauts.

Alto Sara Mingardo makes a fine impression in music that demands a singer of exceptional interpretive skills and a voice that's versatile yet maintains a distinctive timbral quality.
These Italian solo works rely less on inherent melodic charm than on the skills of a singer able to convey a range of emotions but who's also totally aware of her voice and its capabilities, who knows the difference between style and artifice.
And that pretty much defines Mingardo's way with these pieces, most of which are lengthy and demand a variety of dramatic expressive devices, from the intricate and often subtle convolutions of recitative to more overtly formidable Handelian allegro flourishes.

ArkivMusic | Vivaldi: Vespri Per L'assunzione Di Maria / Alessandrini
The Dixit Dominus, Psalm 109, is a feast of exciting music as well, with a lovely duet for two sopranos and a beautiful (and beautifully sung) "Tecum principium" solo by contralto Sara Mingardo.
Mingardo also is outstanding in the Psalm 126, Nisi Dominus, where she sings with great intensity.
Mingardo clearly is the star vocal soloist in the set, but her colleagues are never less than good and most are well above what we too often hear in historically informed performances of Baroque music.

Nevertheless, any collaboration between Sara Mingardo and Rinaldo Alessandrini is destined to be special.
An extended scene from Cavalli’s La Calisto is the ideal demonstration of how the Baroque singer’s art ought to be both gorgeous and intense, and Handel’s seldom recorded cantata Lungi da me pensier tiranno is wonderful, with magnificent continuo from Alessandrini and cellist Luca Peverini.
The long booklet-note about the history of the alto voice is erudite, but it would have been gratifying to learn something about the obscure composers included in this dark yet delightful recital.

Just as Concerto Italiano bring considerable attack and drama to their Gloria, so contralto Sara Mingardo brings greater emotional involvement and intensity to the vocal works than has recently been the case with performances of Vivaldi.
Mingardo treads a middle path between the utter beauty of Emma Kirkby (for instance Opera Arias and Sinfonias - Hyperion CDA66745) and the at times near histrionics of Cecilia Bartoli (The Vivaldi Album - Decca 446 569-2).
This is Mary's song at the foot of Christ's Cross, and in this performance we are usefully reminded in a way that no male singer ever can of the sheer horror and despair of the historical event from a mother's perspective.
