Saracens (rugby club) - Definition, explanation
Saracens were founded in 1876 by the Old Boys of the Philological School in Marylebone, London (later to become Marylebone Grammar School).
Saracens seesaw existence over the nineties was about to continue in 1995/96 where they again found themselves at the wrong end of the table along with West Hartlepool but they were saved by a reversal of the rules that had seen them lose out a few years earlier.
However come October and Saracens had effectively crashed out of the Heineken Cup with back to back defeats to Cardiff and with the team shorn of internationals due to the Autumn Tests the final blow was dealt when Thomas Castaignede suffered an Achilles injury.

However the club did gradually evolve from the transfer of staff during the second world war from Admiralty, Whitehall, to HQ departments in Bath, the establishment of hostels in Bath for staff moving from the Royal Dockyards etc, and the famous (or in-famous) ‘Anchor Club’ in Pultney Street.
During the season 1955-56 the Club's colours were changed from navy blue to the present navy blue, cardinal red and gold.
This is a historical record of the Club since its inception, containing photographs, fixture lists and anything else of interest connected with the Club, bound in a very impressive (although rather musty smelling!) leather ledger, bearing the Admiralty "fouled anchor" crest and the motto "Hunc Librum", and dated 1948.
