Sarajevo and Bosnia essentially became the dividing line between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox faiths when the church divided between Rome and Byzantium.
Sarajevo was first put on the world map in 1914 as the site where Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip assassinated the heir to the Austrian throne and precipitated World War I. Bosnians of Croatian origin tended to side with Austria-Hungary while Bosnians of Serbian origin were more sympathetic towards Princip's wish to unite with Serbia.

Namely, the canton has made some changes in the organizational structure, abolishing the function of the president and vicepresident to accommodate with the higher legislation (Constitution of the Federation).
I saw the official gazette of the canton of Sarajevo; I didn't find the law about the flag and Coat of Arms, but htis last appears in fl and white on the gazette I took in the stand.

Being in Sarajevo last summer, I saw lots of cantonal flags on the streets in the center of the city.
Anyway, Sarajevo was (and probably still is) proud of being the city of four religions, with largest Jewish community in the area (about 20 000, IIRC) before the WWII.
I have visited Sarajevo in August and they have just had addopted the new Canton symbols, of which I only have a very poor copy.
