A papal envoy, Monsignor Francesco Monterisi, said in Sarajevo that the pope still hoped to visit "in one of the next few days, in the near-future." But with security still a nightmare, it was unclear what would make the pontiff change his mind.
Sarajevo has been under Serb siege since April 1992, when Bosnia's Serb minority rebelled against a decision by the republic's Muslims and Croats to secede from Serb-dominated Yugoslavia.

Ambrose (1791-1863), a Greek monk, was appointed Bishop of Sarajevo in Bosnia, and was consecrated by the Patriarch of Constantinople.
Subsequently a later patriarch deposed him, and when his resentful feelings against the a Constantinople authorities were at their height, the Raskolniks approached him with the request to become their bishop.
In 1863, at the time of the Polish insurrection, the Raskolnik archbishop and his lay advisors sent out an encyclical letter to the "Holy Catholic Apostolic Church of the Old Believers", supporting the tsar and declaring that on all main points they were in agreement with the Established Church.

A gang of Muslims marched into a Catholic Church in Novo (New) Sarajevo during the services and verbally harassed the pastor and the faithful.
A young man was beaten so hard that he ended in a hospital for posting flyers announcing a traditional Christmas concert at the Catholic Cathedral in Sarajevo.
But thanks to the perseverance of a couple of local newspapers it was recently uncovered that the persecution's case was knowingly based on the account of a witness who was well-paid by some high government officials in Sarajevo.

Being in Sarajevo last summer, I saw lots of cantonal flags on the streets in the center of the city.
Anyway, Sarajevo was (and probably still is) proud of being the city of four religions, with largest Jewish community in the area (about 20 000, IIRC) before the WWII.
I have visited Sarajevo in August and they have just had addopted the new Canton symbols, of which I only have a very poor copy.

There were a number of memories from the visit which will remain with me a long time, such as the seven hour journey over the mountains to arrive at that historic capital, driving through the rugged beauty of that battered land through towns whose names were so familiar because of what they had suffered.
This time, unlike past visits, I was able on Saturday to join a short tour of the area with some visiting bishops from Europe and to see again the spot where the Grand Duke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated providing the spark which was to ignite the conflagration of the First World War.
Arriving at Sarajevo's Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in anticipation of the Pope's coming last Saturday night, we heard the news of the discovery of the explosives under a bridge which his vehicles were to cross and we passed many minutes waiting with concern lest there be other undiscovered dangers.

Jos Poels located a document on the Sarajevo Canton government website being amendemnts to the law on the flag of the Canton: Zakon o izmjenama Zakona o upotrebi grba i zastave Kantona Sarajevo, 26.
I saw the official gazette of the canton of Sarajevo; I didn't find the law about the flag and Coat of Arms, but htis last appears in fl and white on the gazette I took in the stand.

Already when I entered Sarajevo the first time, I had passed over Mount Igman and through Ilidza, which could be seen burning only weeks before on CNN.
On Easter I had the chance to visit the Sarajevo cathedral, under high IFOR surveillance.
If you intend to do so, please try to find a purpose for going there, Sarajevo is not really a nice place for tourism - and besides that, nobody is waiting for that (in case you do want to be a tourist anyway: Holiday Inn at Sniper Alley offers rooms at DEM 300 per night).

The nine eight-pointed stars representing the communities of the canton, and a rosette combining the ornament from the Sarajevo cathedral, and the door-knocker from an oriental house called Svrzina kuca.
The nine triangles symbolise again the nine communities in the canton, and are adapted from similar roof representations in the coat of arms of the city of Sarajevo.
The bridge is taken from the Sarajevo coat of arms also, and the symbol at the base is the sign of Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olypmic Games (minus Olympic rings), representing a snow-flake.
