Philippine Tarsier (Tarsius syrichta; also called mal in T'boli) is a tarsier that was, for a very long time, believed to exist only in the provinces of Samar, Leyte, and Bohol, Philippines.
Tribal people like the B'laans and T'bolis have been, for a long time, reporting sightings in the province of Sarangani.
Unfortunately these reports were merely discarded as a hoax until March 30, 2002 when a pair of these tiny nocturnal mammals was captured in the mountainous areas of the municipalities of Maitum and Kiamba and was brought to the public, proving that these endangered species really exists in this coastal province.

MALUNGON, Sarangani (MindaNews/6 April 2002) -- Guillermo "Jun" Constantino caught two tarsiers and displayed them to provincial government and tourism officials and selected journalists at his garden home with only one goal in mind: to prove that the endangered tarsiers exist in this part of the country.
It is not certain as yet if the Tarsiers found in Sarangani are of the same species as Bohol's Tarsius syrichta, a subspecies of it, or of another species found in Sulawesi, Indonesia.
It was news to Sarangani officials but not to Lumads such as the B'laans and T'bolis, who said they have long known that tarsiers, called "mal" in their language, exist in the province.

In her answers to MindaNews' queries by e-mail, Gursky, who was also sent photographs of the Sarangani tarsiers, said that while she is an expert on tarsiers, her work is focused on Sulawesian tarsier species Tarsius.
Dagosto said the pictures of the Sarangani tarsiers which was sent to him, "appear to be similar to other Mindanao tarsiers, but external characters are not always the most useful for these animals."

Coraminda Lumibao, vice chair of the Sarangani People's Action for Reform and Good Governance (Spare Go), said "squatters" who entered the Lumibao Farm in the province late last week told her that she would be killed before June 30.
Lumibao, who also heads the Ombudsman's Corruption Prevention Unit in Sarangani, said this was the first time that squatters had intruded into their property.
Some of them were identified by the tenants of the Lumibaos as members of the Sarangani Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Cooperative, the same group that forcibly entered the Dominguez Banana plantation at the height of the election campaign.
