The five (Pancha) Gauda brahmin groups were: the Saraswats (from the banks of the Saraswathi river), Kaanyakubjas (from Kanauj), Gaudas (from the banks of the South Ganga or Bengal), Utkals (from Orissa) and the Maithilas (from Mithila in Bihar).
That is how, Saraswat Brahmins were invited to settle down by the various rulers, perhaps beginning with the Shatavahanas to the Goa Kadambas, and at least in a few cases, even by the Vijayanagar rulers and their feudatories.
The Saraswat Brahmins who were originally associated with Vedic rituals of sacrifices must have the founded the temples later or accepted the the various local gramadevatas as their Kuladevatas.

Saraswat Brahmins, one of the five ancient Gowda Brahmins, the others being Kanyakubja, Maithili, Utkal and Gowda Brahmins, derived their name basically from the mythological river Saraswati that had flowed in the present Punjab and Rajasthan region, from the Himalayas to the western sea near Dwaraka in Gujarat.
This in a nutshell is the mythological and historical background of the Gowda Saraswat Brahmins popularly known as GSBs.
The young Saraswat also wanted to leave the place but the mother persuaded him to stay back and pursue his studies, and assured that she would provide him food and water.

Many of the Saraswats have their kul deva in Mhlasa, Mangeshi, Ramnathi, etc. That is the connection that they try to uphold very diligently.
goan saraswat cooking has been featured...there are plenty of vegetarian recipes in the book and for the very strict followers,even recipes without onion and garlic.
I've noticed that the Saraswat cooking is quite different in South and North Kanaras, Kerala, Goa and Maharastra - local cuisine seems to have influenced a lot and hence the difference...

It is not possible for any and every Saraswat to be eligible for election to the Mahajani of a particular Saraswat-administered temple; he must belong to one of the Mahajan families of THAT temple.
The Saraswats, on the other hand contend that those temples having been built by their forefathers, only they have a right to administer them.
Shivdas and his group say that many of the temples were originally built by the non-Saraswat “kullavis” but the Saraswats used their influence with the Portuguese to fraudulently register them as their own.
