Flesh-fly - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flesh-flies (the family Sarcophagidae) are a family of flies that, as their name suggests, eat meat (from the Greek sarco- = corpse, phage = eating).
They are insects that are often mistaken for common house-flies, although they are somewhat larger in size.

They are similar to flesh flies, family Sarcophagidae, which are important parasites of grasshoppers in North America.
Sarcophagidae are without exception ovoviviparous, meaning that their eggs hatch within the uterus and the female deposits a live larva on the host (Shewell 1987).
A detailed compilation of the North American species of Sarcophagidae associated with grasshoppers, preferred hosts, geographic distribution, and life histories and habits is presented in Rees (1973).

Most of the obligate parasites come from the families Oestridae, Calliphoridae, or Sarcophagidae.
Myiasis would usually be found in already existing wounds, and blood and foul discharge often serve as an attractant for the insects.

As evident from the recent world catalogue (Pape 1996), the definitions of many genus-group taxa within the Sarcophagidae are still very preliminary and fragmentary, and it is highly desirable that these definitions are continuously being refined and elaborated with the ultimate purpose of demonstrating (or further corroborating) formal monophyly through explicit phylogenetic analyses.

Blowflies (Calliphoridae) and Fleshflies (Sarcophagidae) whose larvae are commonly responsible for producing maggot infestations probably once shared a common saprophagous origin, that of breeding in carrion, especially vertebrate carcasses.
Most myiasis-causing flies belong to one of three major families: Oestridae, Sarcophagidae, or Calliphoridae, although representatives of other families, such as Muscidae and Phoridae, also are known to cause myiasis.
A major problem with Sarcophagidae is that females deposit live larvae and these are much more difficult to sterilise than eggs.
