Sarcoptes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Sarcoptes scabiei is recognized by the characteristic oval, ventrally flattened, and dorsally convex tortoise-like body, stout dorsal setae, numerous cuticular spines, and transversely ridged cuticular striations.
Sarcoptes scabiei burrows into the epidemis of its host forming long tunnels in which the life cycle is completed.
On cattle Sarcoptes scabiei is found more frequently on the sparsely-haired parts of the body such as the inner surface of the thighs, under side of neck and brisket, and around the root of the tail.

Sarcoptes Scabiei mites are ectoparasites in mammals and human being s but they have host preference although there is no remarkable morphological difference among mites of different hosts (Fainet.al.1968).Zahler.et al reported that the genus sarcoptes consists of a single heterogenous species genotypically.
Sarcoptes infection in humans (Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis) and sarcoptes scabiei was morphologically indistinguishable from each other (Mellanby, k, et al 1972,Fain A., et al 1968 and Kano, R., et al., 1999).
Sarcoptes   mites may develop crust, erythematous macules, and fissures over the skin with foul smelling wet crusted exudates above the head and in severe cases over the trunk and appendages.

Sarcoptic mange, commonly known as canine scabies is caused by the parasite Sarcoptes scabiei.
If the infection goes on untreated or is mistakenly treated as an allergy, the skin may darken due to the constant irritation, and the surrounding lymph nodes may become enlarged.
Sarcoptic mange is a somewhat common infection and many cases have often been misdiagnosed as severe atopy (inhalant allergy).

Scabies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scabies is a transmissible ectoparasite skin infection characterized by superficial burrows, intense pruritus (itching) and secondary infection.
Caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, variety hominis, it produces intense, itchy skin rashes when the impregnated female tunnels into the stratum corneum of the skin and deposits eggs in the burrow.
The larvae, which hatch in 3-10 days, move about on the skin, molt into a "nymphal" stage, and then mature into adult mites.

 "Sarcoptic Mange"
This week we will discuss "Sarcoptic Mange" which is caused by a tiny burrowing mite called Sarcoptes scabiei variety canis in the dog (the "itch mite") and Notoedres cati which is quite similar and the cause of head mange in the cat.
As will be described below in the life cycle of Sarcoptes scabiei, these mites like to tunnel in the upper layers of the skin.
Occasionally, Sarcoptes mites can be very difficult to retrieve and the animal is treated based on the characteristic lesions and the response to therapy.

The skin condition caused by sarcoptic mites is a disease.
Seasonality: Sarcoptic mange mites may live on animals at any time of year, but on most hosts the greatest reproduction rate and most damaging lesions occur during the cooler months.
