Topic: Sarek TNG episode

  TNG Episode Review: Sarek
Sarek’s aides indignantly refuse to consider the possibility.
There are other examples, though: Sarek’s hands giving away his inner turmoil, Sakkath’s concentration whenever he tries to prop up the ambassador’s control, Crusher’s barely-suppressed rage just before she slaps her son.
And: Although the episode is as TNG as they come the TOS character Sarek blends in perfectly – without losing a dimension but equally without turning the story into a Sarek (or Lenard) vehicle.

 Sarek - Memory Alpha
Sarek's accomplishments as an ambassador to the Federation included the Coridan admission debate of 2267 before the Federation Council, early treaties with the Klingon Empire, Alpha Cygnus IX, and his incredible effort to bring about a Federation-Legaran treaty, which was initiated in 2273.
Sarek's first child was born to a Vulcan princess to whom he was not married.
Clearly, this was intended to be a reference to Amanda and that Sarek was not married to a Vulcan priestess.

Sarek, the renowned Vulcan Ambassador, is on a mission to establish relations between the Federation and a race of beings known as the Legaran.
Mendrossen explains to Captain Picard that Sarek's age has recently caused him to tire easily, and asks him to dispense with the official ceremonies that would normally be accorded a visitor of Sarek's rank, so that he may rest.
When Sarek agrees, Picard suffers through a whirlwind of the Ambassador's emotions unleashed in his mind, while Sarek is able to use the captain's strength to successfully negotiate with the Legaran delegates.

Sarek doesn't know why Spock left, but when pressed, says that he might have gone to see Pardek, a Romulan senator Spock has known since the Khitomer conference who is an extremely moderate element within the Romulan Empire.
How do you know Pardek?" Sarek rambles on a bit about Spock's difficult childhood, and tries to bid Picard a traditional farewell, but is denied even that honor by his failing health (Picard must both force Sarek's hand into the traditional Vulcan symbol and finish the "live long and..." left unfinished by Sarek).

Editors' Note: This episode was actually filmed after 'The Ensigns Of Command' (TNG) but was aired first, since 'Evolution' (TNG) also dealt with Beverly Crusher returning to the Enterprise -D after her absence in the second season.
Note that 'Chain Of Command, Part I' (TNG) suggests that Captain Jellico had helped to negotiate this agreement, although Admiral Nechayev said it was two years prior to that episode (2369), which would put this treaty at 2367.
Sarek is found to have deteriorated to the point where his ability to conduct the Legaran conference is in doubt.

This is an episode that epitomises what Star Trek should aspire to for me. It's interesting to see that it's the Tamarians that have the higher principles, they are the ones willing to sacrifice to establish communications.
Their episodes on occasion could be entertaining in a mindless way which isn't a bad thing but once it was over that was it.
TNG was really a more contemplative series which a lot of people see as stuffy and preachy or somehow boring but I really liked that approach and style and the message it was sending.

All modern Star Trek series ever since the TNG episode ''Sarek'' have had the tendency to name drop and even to feature characters from other series.
But at the heart of this episode is Barclay, after leaving the Enterprise, where he formed some close relationships, he found back on Earth he was having trouble fitting in and making friends.
Furthermore it shows that the producers are looking beyond the single episode and that this will feature into the remainder of the series, a promising prospect.
