Sarfarosh dares to take an honest and courageous look at the reasons behind terrorism and insurgency in India.
The film unfolds in the dense forests bordering Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh and then moves to the awesomely majestic deserts of Rajastan, to the streets of Delhi and the realistically captured underbelly of Mumbai, to narrate a story of the proxy war that Pakistan is waging against India.
Sarfarosh tells the story of an honest, young man, Ajay (Aamir Khan), whose life is never the same after an encounter with terrorists.

But as the things stand, there is still a lot of distrust evident that often surfaces in the form of piquant remarks made by the leaders on both the sides, indicating that the things are not very rosy.
The basic idea of the movie Sarfarosh, with Aamir Khan in lead role, is based on this present political scenario between the two nations with Pakistan fostering a proxy war against India through its intelligence agency, ISI.
No doubt, Sarfarosh has all the ingredients of a masala movie but everything seems to be there for a reason.

 Planet-Bollywood - Film Review - Sarfarosh
The film is fair in its presentation of people from different religions, but it is near malicious when it comes to the depiction of Pakistan.
The problem is that in laying blame on Pakistan's Intelligence Agency, the ISI, for many terrorist actions in India (which is probably even true), Sarfarosh forgets that India's own CID is probably not 100% blameless for many of the terrorist actions in Pakistan.
The main problem for Sarfarosh is that it tries to connect with the audience on multiple levels.

By the time Shahid realises he has been done in by his avaricious friend and laboriously engineers his comeuppance, the director himself appears to be a tad disoriented for his struggle to marry social commentary with commercial razzmatazz.
For a man who smartly handled the socially relevant theme of Sarfarosh, Matthan is strangely uncertain about his vision of Shikhar which, in any case, would have been better off with the cinematic style of an Ashutosh Gowariker.

 Sarfarosh Review
Like Mission Kashmir, Sarfarosh is a political thriller with various song-and-dance numbers, most of which have no apparent reason for being other than to appease the Bollywood marketplace.
The musical bits are even less welcome in Sarfarosh because Matthan has worked them into the storyline by way of an incompatible romantic subplot that too often stops the story dead in its tracks.
Granted, at first the romance does seem to have a real purpose in the film's larger scheme of things, but by the start of the second hour it's obvious that its real function is to serve as intermittent comedy relief and as the perfunctory segue-way to the film's showcase song-and-dance numbers.
