Sarissa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The sarissa (or sarisa) was a 3 to 7 meter (13-21 feet) long double pointed pike used in the Macedonian phalanx.
The sarissa however, remained the backbone for every subsequent Hellenistic army, but lack of training and too great a reliance on the Phalanx instead of the combined use of arms (Alexander's and Philip's great contributions) led to the final defeat of Macedon by the Romans.
Sarissa is also the name of a Greek heavy metal band from Thessaloniki, established in 1985 and still active as of 2004.

The sarissa was a gigantic 16-20 foot (6 m) long double pointed pike (additional info and facts about pike) used in the Macedonian phalanx (additional info and facts about Macedonian phalanx).
The invention of the sarissa is credited to Philip (Englishman and husband of Elizabeth II (born 1921)), father of the celebrated Macedonian king, Alexander the Great (King of Macedon; conqueror of Greece and Egypt and Persia; founder of Alexandria (356-323 BC)).
The sarissa remained the backbone for every Hellenistic (additional info and facts about Hellenistic) army until the rise of Rome (Capital and largest city of Italy; on the Tiber; seat of the Roman Catholic Church; formerly the capital of the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire).

In this paper it is argued that, at the time of Alexander, the shorter sarissa 12 (Macedonian) cubits long (4.1m) was in use as it had greater manoeuvrability than later longer versions.
Using an engineering analysis of the physical aspects of the each of the possible lengths of the sarissa, it is concluded that the increase in length from 4.1m was sufficient to remove the manoeuvrability of the sarissa-armed troops leading to the highly restricted conditions for its use related to us by Polybius.

Sarissa is a Heavy Metal band from Greece and they’ve been around for quite some time now already but have always faced tons of problems which resulted in their being "grounded" in the underground sewer - the Greek Underground Heavy Metal scene.
Sarissa seem to be – unfortunately – more known for the difficulties they’ve faced during their 20-year career rather than the band’s music itself.

Sarissa is a Greek band whose case is considered by me as unique for the Greek (and why not for the European) standards.
The media and the fans that heard it were surprised with its quality, so the underground metal movement in Greece was thinking of Sarissa as the new force in Heavy metal and they were all anxiously waiting for their second demo to come into light.
On the whole you could say that Sarissa in 1994 determined the boundaries and marked the modern epic metal sound, especially in Greece, by creating a unique, personal and most of all trademark style.

Dickinson: Length Isn't Everything - Use of the Macedonian Sarissa in the Time of Alexander the Great
Although considered the weapon that enabled Alexander's victories at the time of Polybius, the sarissa was considered to be an unwieldy weapon that was useable only under the most ideal of conditions.
By considering tactical displays and individual combat it is shown that formations armed with the shorter sarissa were very manoeuvrable.
Finally the paper discusses the logic of extending the sarissa's length and analyses the results of doing so.

The sarissa is a heavy spear, varying in length from nine to 21 feet.
Although devastating when used by massed ranks of trained infantry, the sarissa is heavy and unwieldy, totally unsuitable for fighting man-to-man. For this purpose, each Macedonian warrior is armed with a small sword called a kopus, which is his primary weapon if the ranks break line and the fighting gets up-close-and-personal.
What the Greek kopus was to the sarissa and the Roman pugio was to the gladius, so too was the French gauche to the sabre, the Spanish daga to the espada, the Scottish dirk to the basket hilt, and the English dagger to the rapier.

Drawing on the wealth acquired from the gold mines of Mount Pangaeus in Thrace, to the east of Macedonia, and on the plentiful timber of Macedonia itself, Philip had created a powerful army based on the introduction of the infantry phalanx.
Each member of the phalanx was armed with an enormously long pike known as a sarissa.
Approximately 5.5 m (18 ft) in length, the sarissas were carried horizontally by the soldiers as they advanced in rows, maybe ten deep, so that successive rows of points confronted the enemy before they were close enough to wield their swords.

First of all, let's have a look at the effectiveness of the weapons and tactics used by the phalanx and the legion during the period of their confrontation.
The main weapon of the phalangite was the sarissa, a spear which by that time extended up to 21 feet and it was held with both hands.
The Macedonian battle formation was usually 16 men deep; the first five ranks had their sarissae levelled while the rest held them elevated so as to keep off the incoming missiles.
