Sarmite Bulte, Canadian MP and incumbent in the January 23 election, has been getting a lot of press in the "blogosphere" as of late - too bad it's all negative.
Bulte, the primary backer of Bill C-60, a copyright reform bill, is accused of taking a lot of money from industry lobbyists.
She may not be Tom Delay, but in a minority government where every seat counts, Bulte's loss could swing the minority government from the Liberals to the Conservatives - based on an issue that has hardly any newspaper coverage.

Sam Bulte was the Liberal Party Member of Parliament for Parkdale/High Park, my old riding, and she was embroiled in a scandal when it was revealed that she had financed her election campaigns at the entertainment industry's expense, and subsequently brought down proposal for extremist, US-style copyright laws.
Nash lives in Parkdale/High Park (Bulte lives in a posh uptown neighborhood that's kilometers away) and ran a very good campaign on a progressive platform; she also had the endorsement of Toronto's much-beloved mayor.
Toward the end of her campaign, Bulte became increasingly desperate, but she really scraped the bottom of the barrel when she threatened to sue her critics and then published an editorial in the Toronto Star that lifted passages from Canadian Recording Industry Association speeches and literature nearly verbatim.

Planned for January 19, the $250 a ticket fundraiser for Bulte is to be held in an "intimate and exclusive setting" at the Drake Hotel with a solo performance by the Cowboy Junkie's Margo Timmins.
Bulte needs to understand that her job as a parliamentarian is to work first and foremost in the public interest," said Peggy Nash, NDP candidate for Parkdale- High Park.

First, as a matter of character, it’s troubling to me that Bulte’s reaction to the controversy is a passive-aggressive attempt to portray her wounded heart as a victim of this issue.

Bulte the populace of the riding seems not to be aware of her pleasant demeanor.

Detractors pointed the finger at Bulte, calling her event a conflict of interest, particularly in light of her official position and the fact that she authored a copyright report calling for tougher laws in 2004.

Geist suggests that the NDP has tried to achieve a "balance" of rights in this debate, but I respectfully suggest that it is not the NDP but this Liberal government that is committed to a balanced reform of copyright legislation.

Jack Granatstein says the $250-a-plate bash is inappropriate for a politician who could spearhead key changes to copyright law if she is re-elected on Jan. 23.
Bulte has been working very hard to give the entertainment industry everything it could ask for on a plate and consumers' rights be damned.
Bulte is in big trouble in blogosphere, and we need to keep it up.

MP Sarmite Bulte, the parliamentary secretary for heritage, and who was referred affectionately to by Delacourt as "Sam", was quoted as saying "I’m sick about this.
The article goes on to state that MPs in certain areas have received a high volume of complaints and the complaints are so numerous that the government may have to deviate from its arms length position and do something.
The comments that were made by Sarmite Bulte and quoted in the Toronto Star are more proof positive that Liberals only act or contemplate acting when it’s in their interests to do so.
