SARPY County was named in honor of one who, in the early days of Nebraska's history, was a central figure--Col. Peter A. Sarpy.
Sarpy Center, and later, Papillion, had risen from the position of "cross-roads" to the dignity of villages, although the latter has never been formally incorporated.
The public schools of this county have an enrollment of 1,656 scholars, of whom 911 are males and 745 females.

 Nebraska National Register Sites in Sarpy County
Sarpy was born in St. Louis in 1805 and was employed by the American Fur Company in the Upper Missouri country as early as 1823.
It was the Sarpy County Courthouse in the 1860s and 1870s and then was Bellevue's town hall until 1959.
Sarpy is among the oldest counties in the state and was organized in 1857.

Cass County officials and their constituents threw disputes in the garbage Tuesday morning, agreeing to look at alternative landfill sites without Sarpy County's involvement.
For months, Cass County residents cried foul, saying their leaders weren't properly informing the public of their plans to team with Sarpy County on a joint landfill.
Sarpy County's landfill at 156th Street and Fairview Road west of Springfield is expected to reach capacity in about six years.
