Somewhat later sarsen stones were arranged in an outer circle with continuous lintels and five trilithons were arranged in a horseshoe, the axis of which pointed to the midsummer sunrise.
The larger stones and their lintels are all of Sarsen, a kind of sandstone, brought from about 20 miles away from the Marlborough Downs.
The Sarsen circle is about 100 feet in diameter and originally consisted of 30 uprights and a continuous circle of lintels.

Sarsen stone blocks from the Pleistocene gravels are very common on the beach, at about mid-tide level, at Brownwich and Chilling Cliffs to the northwest of Hillhead.
The stone was a sarsen or greywether, similar in thin-section to a sarsen specimen from the Valley of Stones near Bridehead, Dorset.
Sarsen stones, are common in the Portesham area of Dorset (Valley of the Stones and in Portesham village) and also occur near Lulworth Cove (Arkell, 1947).

Lying within the entrance is an unworked and now recumbent sarsen stone, stained a rusty red caused by rainwater acting on iron, and known as the Slaughter Stone.
The stones in the sarsen circle are carefully shaped and the horizontal lintels are joined not only by means of simple mortice-and-tenon joints, but they are also locked using what is effectively a dovetail joint.
Inside these two circles lies the sarsen horseshoe, consisted originally of five sarsen trilithons (a Greek word that means three stones), each comprising two uprights with a horizontal lintel.

Two measurements were obtained from the Sarsen Circle (photo and results), although since one of these is from material which must be residual (rejected results), the best estimate for the date of this setting (2850 - 2480 cal BC) relies on a single determination (see probability distributions).
The Sarsen Trilithons (photo) appear to be stratigraphically earlier than the Bluestone Oval/Horseshoe and have produced three results.
Analysis of these provide a best estimate for the date of construction of this setting of 2440-2100 cal BC (see probability distributions).

 Sarsen Information
Sarsen stones are stone blocks found in quantity on Salisbury Plain, the Marlborough Downs, in Kent, and in smaller quantities in Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Dorset and Hampshire.
Natural sarsen boulders created by glacial and periglacial effects can be sometimes found scattered on the ground surface, moved by solifluction; the stone is also present in surviving outcrops of the rock.
Sarsen is not an ideal building material however; William Stukeley wrote that Sarsen is "always moist and dewy in winter which proves damp and unwholesome, and rots the furniture".

At the centre of the circle is a stone setting consisting of a horseshoe of tall uprights of sarsen (Tertiary sandstone) encircled by a ring of tall sarsen uprights, all originally capped by horizontal sarsen stones in a post-and-lintel arrangement.
The sarsen stones were transported from the Marlborough Downs 20 miles (30 km) to the north and were erected in a circle of 30 uprights (only 17 of which are still standing) capped by a continuous ring of stone lintels.
Their visible surfaces were laboriously dressed smooth by pounding with stone hammers; the same technique was used to form the mortise-and-tenon (dovetail)joints by which the lintels are held on their uprights, and it was used to form the tongue-and-groove joints by which the lintels of the circle fit together.

On the outside of the main monument is a circle of 17 sarsen stones, or sandstones, left from a set of about 30.
The tallest of these upright sarsen stones is about 7 metres tall with lintel, acting as a reminder that the word sarsen comes from "saracen", meaning heathenish, foreign and vaguely satanic.
The sarsen stones are believed to have been brought from Marlborough Downs, 30 kilometres to the north of Stonehenge, which is a feat incomparable by today's standards.

Moreover this "final" monument was divided into subsets of stones and holes which each totalled a count close to the number of days in either 1 or 2 lunar phase-months (except for the subset of lintel stones which are not "ground-positions" since they hang from other stones).
This allows the original architect of the central sarsen structure (of phase IIIA) to have intended to represent that an extra day is required after counting 33 lunar months of twenty-nine and a half days each.
Afficionadoes of solar calendars will also note that 33 stonehenge lintels gives a total of 73 sarsen stones in the central structure which is one fifth of the number of days in a usual solar year (common calendar year of 365 days).

To transport them from the Marlborough Downs, roughly 20 miles to the north, is a problem of even greater magnitude than that of moving the bluestones.
Most of the way, the going is relatively easy, but at the steepest part of the route, at Redhorn Hill, modern work studies estimate that at least 600 men would have been needed just to get each stone past this obstacle.
